Our organization operates programs involved with providing equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) using certified instructors for individuals with special needs.

Our organization is directly responsible for the care of horses to provide its services.

Our Mission/How we are involved with horses:
The Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation was founded in 1974 to empower and improve the lives of people with cognitive, physical, and psychological disabilities through the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-assisted activities, while serving the therapeutic riding profession through training and education.

Volunteer Opportunities

Barn Buddy
Minimum Age: 10
A Barn Buddy assists with the care of the horses in the barn including grooming and tacking, mucking stalls, and other barn chores. Under 14 years old volunteers must have a parent participate as a Barn Buddy as well.

Minimum Age: 14
The sidewalker is responsible for assisting the rider in a therapeutic lesson by walking alongside the rider and following directions given by the instructor.

Horse Leader
Minimum Age: 14
A horse leader is responsible for handling the horse during a therapeutic riding lesson. This includes grooming and tacking prior to the lesson and leading the horse in the lesson.
