Why are we a Messenger?

The EQUUS Foundation has designated our organization as a Messenger. Click here to learn more about our horse care and use practices.

Messengers are organizations on the Equine Welfare Network that demonstrate a commitment to public transparency and accountability by their willingness to publish and share extensive data about their operations.

Equine Welfare Network Messenger

Primary Focus involving horses (Horse Welfare, Public Service, Sport & Recreation):  Horse Welfare

Our organization operates programs involved with horse rescue, foster care, rehabilitation, adoption and/or retirement.

Our organization's primary activity is equine rescue, adoption & retirement.

Our organization is directly responsible for the care of horses to provide its services.

100% of our total programs and services are horse-related.

Our organization conducts its horse-related programs at one facility.

Our Mission/How we are involved with horses:
We are dedicated to providing a rehabilitative sanctuary for abandoned, abused, unwanted or slaughter-bound horses. We strive to bring people who love horses together with the horses they love.

Horse-related programs:
The horses that we receive from the tracks are retrained in a discipline according to their abilities. Some are suited to jumping but the majority are to be used as trail and pleasure horses. Once they have completed their retraining they are put up for adoption. We are very choosy as to whom we allow to adopt our horses. The person must complete a detailed adoption application and then we require they spend a minimum of 6 weeks working with the horse at our facility. During this time we observe how horse and rider work with one another. Once the 6 weeks is finished we require them to sign a strict adoption agreement. We make unannounced site visits for the first year to check on the horse and his accommodations.

Non-horse-related programs:

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Horse Trainers
Minimum Age: 21
We have a lot of horses that need training in order to adopt them out to families, from fine-tuning to ground work to breaking. Only very experienced horsemen will be allowed to preform these activities and must be approved on-site through observation. A lot of our horses are very green or have never been ridden so this is not a task for the average rider.

Handy-Man/Woman Volunteers
Minimum Age: 18
Keeping up on the barn and property maintenance is a daily task. We are always in need of fence repairs, building and barn repairs, painting and lawn and field care, among other property additions. We also are looking for people who specialize in roofing, construction or electrician work.

Daily Barn Volunteers Needed
Minimum Age: 14
We need daily volunteers to cover our 2 volunteer shifts a day. Our AM shift is 9am-11pm and our PM shift is 4:30pm-6:30pm. Daily chorse include feeding, horse turn in/turn out, stall cleaning, grooming, water/feed bucket cleaning and barn maintenance.

Fundraising And Event Planning Volunteers
Minimum Age: 16
Hosting fundraisers and events are a must to keep our rescue running. We are always looking for new fundraising ideas as well as volunteers to help us plan, manage and run our fundraisers and events.
