We are proud to be an EQUUS Foundation Guardian and share our horse care & use practices with the public.

MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services which are in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization does not provide community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.

Mission:
Our mission has been, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing. Our populations include children and adults with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military and the impoverished.

     Pal-O-Mine will continue to reach these goals through the following accomplishments and capabilities, including: the professionalism and expertise of our staff and volunteers; the agricultural designation, and ownership of our property, affords us flexibility with adapting to the needs of our students and clients; we are recognized for our outstanding reputation for program breadth and innovation locally and nationally; the multiple programs we facilitate reaches the needs of a variety of client populations; our mission focused work and passion for excellence is met with our values to uphold our own high standards for training, safety and program delivery.
     In addition, Pal-O-Mine has continued to grow through collaboration with other not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions to partner and expand our programming to an ever-widening population. Pal-O-Mine has also become one of only 32 facilities in the world to be honored with being an EAGALA designated Military Services Provider Program. This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community.
     Pal-O-Mine’s long-term plan to sustain our programs involves the embarkment on a $3 million dollar Capital Campaign which will allow us to continue our mission and adapt our properties with state of the art facilities to meet the needs of our students for years to come.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     1.Adaptive Riding and Unmounted Programs - Pal-O-Mine provides quality adaptive horseback riding to individuals with cognitive, physical, emotional and multiple disabilities. Adaptive horseback riding provides unique benefits to our students. The goals for each lesson are tailored to make improvements in the most needed areas of the rider’s life. Adaptive riding sessions are exceptional for improving fine and gross motor skills, balance, coordination, sensorimotor skills, language, and social skills. In addition, each one of our riding instructors excels in their field and continues with training and certification throughout their careers.
     
     2.Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) - Pal-O-Mine’s EAL programs incorporate horses experientially for educational, emotional, growth and learning. EAL uses unique approaches to create positive and constructive learning experiences for children and adolescents who are at risk of failing in the traditional academic setting. EAL sessions incorporate guided and safe horse interactions, positive interaction between students, animals and adults, as well as the incorporation of grade-level appropriate reading, writing, art and math skills. These approaches, combined with a varied and very specialized teaching staff helps to reengage the typically disengaged or defiant student and recreate a positive learning experience that carries over into the students’ traditional classroom experiences.
     
     3.Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) - Our Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program follows the prescribed model designed by EAGALA, Inc., the leading international EAP training and certifying organization. Currently, Pal-O-Mine has 7 Licensed Mental Health Professionals and 11 Equine Specialists who are certified in the EAGALA model. Pal-O-Mine also is the host to the New York Metropolitan Networking Group.
     
     Pal-O-Mine offers individual, family and group therapy. Groups focus on issues including but not limited to grief, trauma and abuse, eating disorders, substance abuse, addiction and codependency. Participating populations include at-risk youth, women and the military. EAP affords clients the opportunity to gain knowledge about their behaviors while providing them with an emotionally safe environment for them to develop positive alternatives. The benefits to the client include increased self-esteem, improved communication skills, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem solving, development of coping skills and taking responsibilities for themselves.
     
     4.Hippotherapy - Hippotherapy is a treatment strategy provided by licensed and specially trained occupational therapists, physical therapists, or speech-language pathologists as part of a patient’s overall treatment plan. The therapist uses the movement of the horse to help address and improve a variety of deficits, including but not limited to: Deficits in sensory processing, gross motor, fine motor, balance, speech production, language, swallowing, and social skills. The horse’s walk provides multidimensional movement, which is variable, rhythmic and repetitive. This movement is modified by trained horse handlers under the direction of the therapist. The horse provides a dynamic base of support, making it an excellent tool for increasing trunk strength and control, balance, building overall postural strength and endurance, addressing weight bearing, motor planning and gait training. The effects of equine movement on postural control, sensory systems, and motor planning can be used to facilitate coordination and timing, grading of responses, respiratory control, sensory integration skills, attentional skills, speech production skills, swallowing and receptive, expressive and pragmatic language development.
     
     5.JSTEP (Job Security Through Equine Partnership) – The major focus of the J-STEP Program is to provide meaningful employment opportunities to adults with disabilities and to establish a green living program at Pal-O-Mine. Pal-O-Mine runs a state of the art vocational training center where young adults intern to gain valuable life skills including clerical and business management skills, daily living skills, nutritional skills and proper etiquette, financial literacy and management skills, organic farming, recycling and 3-D printing.
     
     6.Summer Employment Training – The Summer Employment Training Program (ETP) is an inclusive, innovative work study transitional program that provides workforce skills and leadership training to youth with a myriad of disabilities. The ETP provides engaging and effective out-of-school vocational training and character education and works to achieve the following goals: Provide economic and financial literacy skills through stipends; foster engagement in the learning process; decrease negative behaviors; improve character and awareness of the importance of good character; address emotional issues and trauma; and increase self-esteem and confidence.
     
     7.Corporate Training - Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential approach that fosters real lasting change. It is a unique opportunity that goes beyond traditional leadership programs to restore balance in people’s lives while teaching critical thinking, clear communication and social skills. A typical training involves activities on the ground with the horses (there is no riding), which provides opportunities for team discovery through experiential learning. Prior horse experience is not necessary to benefit from this program. Equine Assisted Team Leadership programs are effective in situations as diverse as: Building cohesion; Navigating cultural differences; Mitigating crisis; Screening candidates for new hire; Collaborating with staff to enhance communication and adapt to new management style and initiatives

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     Pal-O-Mine’s barn manager and barn staff closely monitor each horses’ work and exercise schedule, and closely monitor for any changes in behavior. We observe our herds non-verbal communication as an indicator that they are benefiting from their interactions with our students, volunteers and staff. We have many independent contractors that are trained in natural horsemanship and Parelli that help to identify any equine needs. Our horses are provided with individual breaks/days off as needed, along with facility-wide closures periodically throughout the year to allow our horses to be tack and interaction-free for a period of 1-2 weeks at a time. In addition, any horse entering the program is brought in on a 3-month trial, with stipulations that the horse be returned to the owner if the horse is not appropriate for this line of work.

Additional information about our rehoming policies and practices:

Donated: The ownership and custody of the equine is transferred to the organization by its owner/trainer/responsible agent utilizing a donation document.

Equine Assisted Services (EAS): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or unmounted, to include 1) psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the licensed mental health professional and the client, 2) occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies utilizing equine movement set forth by the licensed therapist and the client, 3) horsemanship instruction adapted to the ability/disability of those receiving services, for the puropse of contributing positively to their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being conducted by a certified professional, and 4) experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills to achieve educational, professional and personal goals conducted by a licensed educator, mental health professional or coach. Please refer to our Guidelines for Conducting EAS for additional information.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disability or impairment) that require or benefit from instructors, specialists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators who have certified training for their scope of practice applicable to the people participating in the programs and specific to the program offerings. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment or situation and/or a lack of resources, including economic resources, placing them at risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking underage, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.

Community Outreach: Refers to activities and public education programs aimed at educating the public about the horse-human bond, issues impacting the welfare of horses, and how horses change lives. This could include, but is not limited to, any activity OTHER THAN Equine Assisted Services (EAS) that require a credentialed service provider, such as off site visits from horses, on site tours, seminars and clinics, camps, community service hours, able-bodied mounted and unmounted lessons, etc.
