We are proud to be an EQUUS Foundation Guardian and share our horse care & use practices with the public.

MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services which are in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization does not provide community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.

Mission:
Our mission: TherapyWorks NW desires to provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies to children with disabilities who would otherwise be denied adequate services due to financial limitations; thereby helping children to reach their full potential to participate in society and enjoy living.
     
     At TherapyWorks NW, we utilize hippotherapy as a therapeutic treatment strategy in conjunction with our physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. During a hippotherapy treatment session, equine movement is purposefully manipulated by a licensed therapist to engage a child’s physical and sensory systems in order to create functional change. The horses we work with are an integral part of helping many of our pediatric clients with disabilities meet their therapy goals.

Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
TherapyWorks NW has celebrated many accomplishments over the past several years. In 2014, we upgraded our hippotherapy treatment facility from a 30’ X 60’ pole barn with attached 3-sided event tent to a 72’ x 96’ barn structure. Our current barn includes 5 horse stalls, a tack room, a feed storage room, and approximately 60’ x 85’ of working space for hippotherapy treatments. The new barn has accommodated our growing client base and allows us to conduct hippotherapy treatments in a temperature-controlled indoor space year-round. We also added 1600 square feet of treatment and office space to our clinic in 2017 to accommodate for growth; this has given us the capacity to serve 30-50% more children annually. Furthermore, in 2017, our executive director was featured in the Gresham Outlook as one of the five “Exceptional Women” of the year in our community. In 2018, TherapyWorks NW raised $36,500 through our annual Matching Fund Project to fund therapies for financially underprivileged children, which has been the largest fundraised amount to date.
     
     Our primary goal at TherapyWorks NW is to continue to meet our mission statement of providing therapy for children regardless ability to pay including hippotherapy. We feel confident in our capability to meet this goal moving forward as our clinic has been successful and growing since 2006. Current strategies to meet our goal include: (1) Upgrading our treatment rooms and waiting area to accommodate our growing client base, (2) Improving business office procedures by (a) implementing practice management software and (b) expanding and diversifying our business office staff to assure efficient and tightly run operations with respect to billing and accounts receivable, (3) Continuing to build on a growing success with writing and applying for match grants to fund therapy for low income families, and (4) Seeking funding help for areas of excess overhead expense (primarily horse costs). Strategy 1 was completed last fall, strategy 2(a) was completed last winter, and strategies 2(b)-4 are currently in process.
     
     Long-term strategies to sustain our organization include diversification in staff/management to include leadership for more in depth community networking, fundraising event promotion, and community partnership development. These strategies are part of our long-term goal to move to a larger facility with more pasture property or to open a second barn location, allowing for further growth in our client base and expansion of our hippotherapy program. With the proper management, this long term growth and sustainability idea could be as soon as a few years away.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     TherapyWorks NW offers equine interactive therapy services via the use of hippotherapy as a treatment strategy within the scope of our speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy services.

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     Horses are always under the supervision of barn staff during all therapy sessions, all visitation by families or others to clinic, and during all volunteer interactions. No abuse or mistreatment of the horses is tolerated. A gentle approach to greet a horse at its head is always encouraged prior to working with the horse. The horses are allowed to be given treats from a small feed bin (not bare hands usually).


Our Programs/Activities that are not equine-related and/or involving animals other than equines:
 ThearpyWorks NW has two buildings in which our organization operates; our main clinic building and our on-site hippotherapy treatment barn. All equine-related treatment activities take place in our barn. In our main clinic building, we provide traditional (non-equine related) pediatric physical, occupational, and speech therapy services.
     
     As a non-profit organization, TherapyWorks NW operates a sustainable fee-for-service program as well as a Charitable Therapy Program. Our goal through the Charitable Therapy Program is to provide at least 35% of our service hours charitably every year in order to meet the needs of low income families in our community. We accomplish this goal through organizational grant seeking, ongoing foundation partnerships to sponsor therapy for individual children, pro bono work, and funding charitable therapy hours from our fee-for-service income.

Equine Assisted Services (EAS): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or unmounted, to include 1) psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the licensed mental health professional and the client, 2) occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies utilizing equine movement set forth by the licensed therapist and the client, 3) horsemanship instruction adapted to the ability/disability of those receiving services, for the puropse of contributing positively to their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being conducted by a certified professional, and 4) experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills to achieve educational, professional and personal goals conducted by a licensed educator, mental health professional or coach. Please refer to our Guidelines for Conducting EAS for additional information.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disability or impairment) that require or benefit from instructors, specialists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators who have certified training for their scope of practice applicable to the people participating in the programs and specific to the program offerings. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment or situation and/or a lack of resources, including economic resources, placing them at risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking underage, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.

Community Outreach: Refers to activities and public education programs aimed at educating the public about the horse-human bond, issues impacting the welfare of horses, and how horses change lives. This could include, but is not limited to, any activity OTHER THAN Equine Assisted Services (EAS) that require a credentialed service provider, such as off site visits from horses, on site tours, seminars and clinics, camps, community service hours, able-bodied mounted and unmounted lessons, etc.
