Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy/Speech-Language Pathology
Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
Dreams on Horseback's instructors partner with horses to provide unique learning experiences that address the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of participants.
Our organization offers services through four primary programs. The first is therapeutic riding lessons which are conducted for children and adults with developmental disabilities or congenital disabilities.
The second is vocational training for teens and young adults with special needs. The daily care our horses require provides a plethora of opportunity for teens and young adults to learn valuable skills to aid in their transition to entry level positions following graduation from high school.
The third program is horse partnered learning - experiential learning exercises that lead to self-discovery. This program is offered to at-risk teens, adults with developmental disabilities, and seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease. Horse partnered learning exercises are designed for participants and our trained professionals to identify participants' personal challenges and help them explore ways to remedy them.
Finally, our fourth program, Military Connections, utilizes all of our horse activity options to address reintegration challenges of military personnel and their family members who are struggling to rebuild their lives after deployment.
At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
The following are examples of policies and procedures put in place to ensure the humane treatment of the horse partners in our care.
1) Barn is managed by a professional horse person with more than a decade of experience with the care and keeping of horses.
2) An extensive selection process guarantees that the demands placed on our horse partners are a good "psychological" and "physical" fit to help guarantee their success and happiness.
3) Horse partners are valuable staff members and as such are closely monitored for signs of stress. They frequently have their job expectations changed as needed when signs of stress occur. Ex: horses that do not like the "busyness" of community groups who come for equine education days are not asked to do that work.
4) Volunteers and participants are taught proper ways to interact with horses to alleviate stress such a limiting the time they spend near the horse's head. or avoiding interactions with horse partners when they are in their stalls.
5) "Horse Use" hours are monitored and recorded. Horses cannot be used for more than three hours on any given day and typically are scheduled for no more than two.
6) The organization closes its door to all programming on Sunday to give our horse partners one day of respite from the busyness of our popular barn.
7) Horses are only corrected by instructors or trainers whose experience and skills warrants their ability to do so in the most humane of manners and with the most minimal use of force necessary.
8) Girthing is only conducted by instructors to guarantee the happiness of the horse.
9) Horses are kept in a manner consistent with best practices in mind including daily stall care, feeding 4X per day, clean water buckets and access to water at all times, daily turnout as weather allows, veterinarian oversight of wound care and other medical procedures, regular farrier care, daily grooming.
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
Dreams on Horseback has trained 368 therapeutic riding volunteers since our therapeutic riding program began in 2014 which increases the knowledge of the Columbus community in proper horse care and keeping. In addition, all of our vocational students take the knowledge they learn in our programs about the care and keeping of horses with them beyond our stable. We also frequently host "ranch days" or "community volunteer days" where the public at large is invited to learn about our horse partners. Of course, any of our participants in our therapeutic riding, vocational and military programs also learn about horses and what is required to guarantee their well-being.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disability or impairment) that require or benefit from instructors, specialists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators who have certified training for their scope of practice applicable to the people participating in the programs and specific to the program offerings. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking underage, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.
Community Outreach: Refers to public education programs aimed at educating the public about the horse-human bond, issues impacting the welfare of horses, and how horses change lives and activities that include, but are not limited to, any activity OTHER THAN Equine Assisted Services (EAS) that require a credentialed service provider, such as off site visits with horses at hospitals, nursing homes, and schools, crisis response, workplace well-being, on site tours, seminars and clinics, camps, community service hours, able-bodied mounted and unmounted lessons, etc.
