MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Second Chance Ranch serves as a sanctuary for a special collection of retired sport horses offering a unique animal-assisted therapy. Leading With Horses is a platform for mental health professionals and other service organizations to apply Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) in their existing treatment program, as an alternative to conventional talk therapy.

We have as our main goals -
     1) a workspace that delivers a non-riding alternative to conventional talk and other behavioral therapies open to all licensed mental health professionals to achieve a more holistic and comprehensive approach in providing solutions and treatment;
     2) a program designed for professionals to engage in the process of animal assisted therapy to further promote the value of equines as instruments of teaching and healing.
     
     First and foremost our priority is to provide the horses with optimum care and maintain the status of a premier retirement facility. Our program has evolved over the years, catering to meet the needs of our horses, and also the challenges that youth and young adults face today.
     
     SCR has become a popular interactive participant in the mental health industry with the use of animal assisted therapy. We have successfully demonstrated the value of equines as therapeutic partners, and continue to contribute to research in this field.
     
     One of our objectives is to become less reliant on grants and donations, and more financially self-sufficient. Leading With Horses program is a revenue producing program service. Income comes from fees to licensed counselors / therapists and we avoid having to budget for staffing, while maximizing our audience. This program has opened avenues to new grants and a larger donor audience.
     
     In January of 2018 we purchased a property in Spokane, WA. Since that time we have established our program with the community and have as our main clients, two of the largest in-patient youth wellness centers; The Healing Lodge and Excelsior Wellness Center. We also work with the Catholic Charities Foster Family program and a number of private therapists.
     
     Due to the COVID-19 pandemic some goals have been delayed, however, we anticipate that in early 2021 we will enter into contracts with both The Healing Lodge and Excelsior Wellness Center. These contracts will secure specific days of the week where each of these in-patient organizations can come out to utilize our farm and horses to conduct off-site counseling.

Horse Rescue, Rehabilitation, Retraining & Re-homing:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     Now in our 20th year, SCR has served the Pacific NW since 1999, holding the record for the largest and longest standing equine rehabilitation and adoptive program before transitioning to a sanctuary and equine facilitated psychotherapy (non-riding) program in 2012. In 1981, long before Second Chance Ranch was formed, Executive Director, Katie Merwick was the first in the Pacific Northwest to have an organized program with adoption contracts to transition thoroughbreds from their racing career, including rehabilitation, re-start training, and rehoming.
     
     While more than 1000 thoroughbreds have been rehomed over the decades, Second Chance Ranch is currently home to 35 permanent thoroughbred residents. We are at full capacity, however, many of these horses are in their late teens and mid-20s. We accept horses into the program when room is available. These horses are guaranteed a loving home with optimum care and vetting to live their lives out.

Community Outreach and/or Public Education:

Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Our program, Leading With Horses, is a collaboration between a mental health professional (MHP) and an onsite expert equine professional to include adjunct EAP therapy to existing treatment programs. We provide the venue for MHP to bring their clients/patients to Second Chance Ranch. The equine specialist personally facilitates the experience only by introducing them to horsemanship; managing the horses and giving instruction on handling the horses.
     
      Our programs do not include riding or riding instruction, and the program specifically excludes any disability other than mental (with exception to speech and hearing impairment). We do not have a program specific to “Veterans”, however, many of our clients in therapy are veterans and we certainly welcome them! Our primary target audience is “youth”, with a strong focus on “family”, which includes all ages from sibling to grandparent. The MPH addresses a multitude of issues effecting both adults and youth such as depression, PTSD, anti-bullying and suicide prevention, with a focus on “family counseling” to achieve a more holistic and comprehensive approach in providing solutions and treatment.
     
      By integrating the horse-to-human connection, we offer experiential learning where the meaning and the process is solely based on the individual’s personal experience, rather than being “taught” through someone else’s experience. By allowing them to process information in a different way, it allows professionals to observe their client’s triggers and respond to them in real-time counseling.
     
      Our program offers unique services that we developed based on the needs of the mental health community through surveys and focus groups. This team approach of licensed mental health professional and equine expert offers a safe, controlled environment for the client. Sessions are customized and facilitated to specifically address the needs expressed by the MHP.
     
      EQUINE ART PROGRAM:
      Seasonally, and typically in the summer months only, we have an art program for at-risk teens, that involves painting with horses. We also have "Equine Artists" who enjoy expressing themselves with a paintbrush. Photos of art produced by the horses is available on our website.
     
     In addition, within the scope of our equine facilitated therapy program, we the encourage networking of professionals, research, and shared resources among nonprofits.
     
     Second Chance Ranch purchased a rural property within close proximity to several universities in the Spokane community (Gonzaga, Whitmore, Whitworth, Washington State University and WSU Extensions). This gives us an opportunity to offer psychology internships and research projects through the college’s community engagement centers.
     
     We assist with rehoming horses surrendered by owners and trainers off and on the track. We do this by lending our many years of experience in evaluating the horse, screening potential adopters, and choosing or customizing contracts (Trial, Free-Lease, Adoption, Right of First Refusal).

We are a retirement sanctuary with a non-riding program so most of the horses are not evaluated under saddle, unless it is a horse that can be re-homed for riding.
     
     Typically all health records are available by the person surrendering the horse. We DO have a vet out for a full health work up, vaccinate, deworm, dental, and diagnostics such as fecal, xray, etc IF necessary. That was more common when we operated as a full-time "Rescue".
     
     I want to make clear that all of the above are important routine tasks, but didn't check the boxes because we usually don't have to do that for each horse coming in.

I did not check the box for a horse being euthanized if it was healthy but dangerous - in 50 years of handling horses, 35 as a professional and 20 years operating an equine nonprofit - I have NEVER seen or met a horse that could not be turned around in the right environment and with the right skills. I have, however, trained and mentally/emotionally rehabilitated probably more than 100 horses who were going to be euthanized, deemed dangerous. None of them were. It didn't take long to earn their trust and show them a new way of communication, by example, the same way I see these horses turn dangerous people around!

Rehoming

Additional information about our rehoming policies and practices:
I have several variations of contracts - attached is a sample adoption agreement and a free lease agreement. We also have trial and right of first refusal agreements.
     
     On a case-by-case basis, our horses have been adopted for a fee. Most of them go on a "free lease" where we maintain ownership since we operate mainly has a sanctuary now.
     
     If there is a fee, we ask slightly under fair market value for younger horses who have training, however, we also have a "buy back" term in our adoption agreement, meaning if they return the horse within 6 months we may refund the adoption fee.
     
     We also require a trial period before I will sign an adoption contract. They MUST handle the horse here at our farm first (ride if it's rideable), and if it seems like a good match, I want to see the horse after a month in their environment before agreeing to adopt or free lease the horse to that person. This is a welcomed policy by prospective adopters. They are responsible for all cost of care, transportation and vetting if there is an injury.

     As a retirement sanctuary, we are no longer involved with rescue agencies. Occasionally, we are called upon to take a horse in.
     
     In January, 2019 I was contacted by a long-time friend and associate, Scott Beckstead with the HSUS. I agreed to take in a horse from a Deschutes, Oregon Sheriff's office confiscation. The 15 year old QH mare is here at the farm, being evaluated for our program.
