SAVE THE DATE! Horses Helping People Family Resource Day - October 5, 2014

WESTPORT, CT - July 25, 2014 - The EQUUS Foundation and the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) are collaborating on a new free event to benefit the local public in Palm Beach County.

The inaugural Horses Helping People Family Resource Day will introduce and educate the local community to the positive impact of the horse-human bond and the benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies. This free event will be held, rain or shine, on October 5, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the covered Van Kampen Arena located at 13500 South Shore Boulevard in Wellington Florida.

The EQUUS Foundation and AACY are working together to connect caregiving youth across the United States to the more than 800 equine charities on the Foundation's Equine Welfare Network. "We are thrilled to co-host this pilot event which will not only benefit the caregiving youth in Palm Beach County but also demonstrate how horses move people beyond their boundaries to the local community as a whole," said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President.

Horses enrich the lives of millions of people every day. The impact of the horse human bond can be as simple as building confidence and physical strength to as astounding as first words and first steps. The Horses Helping People Family Resource Day will bring together the local public and recreational and therapeutic horseback riding organizations for a fun filled day of demonstrations and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Horses Helping People Family Resource Day will give children and their families the opportunity to see, touch, and experience the horse's unique ability to empower, teach and heal up close and personal. Free sessions at each of the participating riding facilities will be drawn throughout the day. One of the highlights will be a clinic for local hunter/jumper riders by international grand prix rider, Debbie Stephens.

Collaboration has become essential to the success of the non-profit business sector. With the rising costs of operations and the increased demand for donations and grant dollars, non-profit organizations need to turn to creative ways to support their programs. Working together and pooling resources with other organizations is one way to increase awareness in the community of an organization's mission, services, and needs.

"Abbi Bentz, a volunteer for the EQUUS Foundation and AACY Board member, suggested the collaboration between our organizations earlier this year," said Coakley. "As a caregiver for my elderly parents, I feel emotionally and physically drained most of the time and I couldn't begin to imagine the stress endured by youth caregivers, some as young as eight years old, who have to take on not just the household responsibilities for cooking, cleaning and laundry, but also personal care like bathing and dressing an invalid parent."

There are an estimated 65.7 million adult caregivers, 29% of the U.S. adult population, providing care to someone who is ill, disabled or aged according to the Family Caregiver Alliance (https://www.caregiver.org/selected-caregiver-statistics).

The estimated 1.4 million youth caregivers are not counted in this statistic.
