EQUUS Foundation Announces New Funding Program

"It's more important now than ever before that we have confidence in the charities that we support, and this is especially true among equine charities where there may be wide differences in how horses are cared for," said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President.

The EQUUS Foundation has developed one of the most comprehensive and impartial verification processes to inspire donor confidence in the charities selected to receive financial support each year. At the core is the requirement to be fully transparent and accountable to the public.

"We encourage every equine charity operating at the highest standards for horse care to participate on our Equine Welfare Network with the goal of connecting them to a nationwide support base of equine enthusiasts and advocates," said Coakley.

Starting in 2018, organizations that meet the transparency requirements set by the EQUUS Foundation will receive the Guardian designation. The Guardians program is replacing the Foundation's Messengers program. The designation was changed to Guardian to reflect an organization's dedication to ensuring that America's horses are safe and live in comfort with purpose and dignity.

As the only national animal welfare charity in the United States 100% dedicated to horse welfare and the horse-human bond, the EQUUS Foundation is committed to supporting organizations operating at the highest standards that:
• Shelter, rehabilitate, and retrain America's horses at risk for abuse, neglect, and slaughter, and re-home them with careers as athletes, companions, teachers, and especially healers;
• Provide opportunities for horses to change people's lives, especially in the area of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) for people with special needs.

Only Guardians will be eligible to receive EQUUS Foundation Transparency Awards. Transparency Awards range from $500 to $5,000 and are used to underwrite the costs associated with the care of horses, such as veterinary, dental, and farrier care, horse feed, supplements, bedding, horse gear, equipment, and supplies as well as alternative treatments and interventions.

"We awarded over $200,000 in 2017, but there are many more deserving organizations that need a helping hand. We'd like to double our awards in 2018 and inspire more horse lovers to become horse protectors," said Coakley.

A gift today will help ensure a better life for a horse tomorrow!
