Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night . . .

The well-known creed - Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds - is an apt description of not just the U.S. Postal Service but also of the thousands of veterinarians serving the equine community nationwide.

Among the most prominent is EQUUS Foundation Corporate Partner, Fairfield Equine Associates – marking their 30th year anniversary this year. Fairfield Equine Associates will once again serve as the Official Veterinarian of the Fairfield County Hunt Club June Benefit Horse Show on Tuesday, June 18th through Saturday, June 22nd in Westport, Connecticut. Fairfield Equine is pleased to continue to serve as the veterinarians for Fairfield's horses and the horses competing at Fairfield horse shows.

Fairfield Equine offers ambulatory care to its clients on a daily basis with a fleet of fully-equipped vehicles. "The foundation of a horse's health relies on preventing disease along with early recognition of health challenges," said Richard Mitchell, DVM, President of Fairfield Equine Associates.

"To meet this need," continued Mitchell, "our Wellness Program is designed to provide our clients with the services and information necessary to maintain consistent and long-term equine health."

Many horse owners have experienced an equine medical emergency; however, many common equine diseases and certain kinds of colic and lameness can be prevented with wellness examinations, appropriate vaccination, parasite control and dental care.

Founded in 1989, Fairfield Equine Associates has gained a world-wide reputation as one of the finest equine medical practices in the world.

In November of 2000, Fairfield Equine opened a state-of-the-art equine hospital in Newtown, Connecticut, with a highly-trained staff and the latest technological advancements. The surgical facilities are of the highest quality and most technologically-advanced in the country allowing the staff and surgeons to perform a wide range of procedures, from emergency colic and soft tissue surgeries, to specialized and advanced orthopedic surgeries.

Having the best possible diagnostic tools available and unrivaled experience in diagnosis can save the lives and the careers of horses.

• Fairfield Equine was one of the first clinics in the country to be equipped with a digital radiography unit that stores electronic images both on site and online and allows doctors to tend to a case and view digital images from anywhere in the world.

• Fairfield Equine's ultrasound equipment is the most advanced available.

• Fairfield Equine's bone-scanning process is a non-invasive procedure that provides a skeletal image of the horse and is an excellent resource in discovering inflammation, and potential sources of lameness.

• Fairfield Equine's Hallmarq Standing MRI provides detailed images of the lower limb and is the best imaging tool for evaluating injuries to joint structures and soft tissue structures such as tendons and ligaments – enabling the veterinarians to deliver an accurate diagnosis and maximize a horse's prognosis for return to performance.

The Importance of Veterinary Research
In addition to serving as a member of the EQUUS Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. Mitchell serves as Chairman of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation Advisory Council. Mitchell was instrumental in encouraging the EQUUS Foundation to partner with The AAEP Foundation to establish the EQUUS Foundation Research Fellows program in 2011 to emphasize the importance of equine research, to reward researchers for their contributions, and to meet the increasing need to train future equine veterinary researchers.

A Little Known Fact . . .
Did you know that veterinarians face disproportionately higher suicide rates than the general population? Pushed to the brink by mounting debt from education, long work hours and client expectations and complaints, studies have shown that anxiety, depression and burnout are common among veterinarians, as are related personality traits such as perfectionism.
