For the past 4 years, Anna had been searching for the perfect youngster to join her forever family. With little luck, she began to give up hope. However, this past August, as she lay sick in bed, she did what she did almost every Friday night, put her kids to bed, and I shopped the rescues for a young horse in need of a home.

Unlike the numerous Fridays before, this time something was different, she had received an email from Hope4Horses with the picture of not one, but two youngsters needing forever homes. “One of them really stuck out at me; Many Ways, a Bay Thoroughbred that hadn't made the track. He was young, gawky and all legs throughbred (something I'd repeatedly said would never work in my pasture), but something about this little guy struck me.”

Just 2 days later, Anna and her trainer were on the road, trailer in tow, driving through the smoke from one of the worst firestorms in Bay Area history to pick up “this little gawky adorable, incredible little guy.”

When they arrived Anita Markiewicz greeted them and took them down the aisle past numerous well cared for horses of all shapes and sizes. “When we saw Many Ways, aka Maui, it was love at first sight. He was by far the quietest, calmest yearling I'd ever seen. He practically haltered himself. Before we'd even blinked, Maui had loaded himself like he'd done it 1000 times before and was ready to go to his new home.”

When Maui finally arrived at the pasture, amid some of the worst smoke in the world (AQI of 350+) Maui, walked calmly off the trailer completely unphased and into his paddock. He spent the next 10 days learning ground manners and on day 10 Anna led him up to the herd to meet them. Maui took this in stride. He walked over to one of the more dominant mares, a black pasofino, and he gently clacked his teeth, and became her new adopted foal. Three months later he has become a pasture favorite.

“The membership of the cooperative pasture where he is housed, has taken a strong liking to him. Members regularly take the "Maui Selfie" and I have been known to joke Maui is my 2020 Covid Summer Trip (because visiting him these days is about the only place we venture out to). Maui couldn't be happier roaming green grass in this 500+ acre pasture, with his pals, and growing up strong to prepare for when he is ready to start his riding career.”

“I can't thank Hope4Horses and Anita enough for helping me find my gawky silly little dream horse who I have to say is rapidly losing his title of gawky, and becoming known as the handsome gentleman at the pasture.”
