Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
Equine Assisted Services
Pegasus currently offers two programs for people with disabilities and special needs as well as partner organizations that work with foster children, victims of abuse and human trafficking, at-risk individuals, children in grief, and schools that serve children with high personal attention needs: therapeutic horseback riding and a therapeutic horsemanship program.
Therapeutic Riding
Therapeutic riding lessons include instruction in basic equestrian skills and opportunities for social interaction, recreation, sport, exercise, and work with basic developmental concepts. The transfer of motion from horse to rider offers a unique therapeutic experience that can improve balance, muscular strength, flexibility and more.
Through engagement with the instructor, volunteers, and the horse, individuals with cognitive impairment experience both physical and cognitive enhancements. The advantages derived from therapeutic riding vary among participants, influenced by factors such as the type and severity of the disability, the rider's motivation, and the connection between the rider and the horse. Riding necessitates the use of the entire body for steering, control, horse adjustment, and balance maintenance. As horses demand not only physical skills but also cognitive skills for achievement, the activity unveils the rider's strengths and weaknesses.
Unlike many traditional therapeutic techniques that may reach a plateau, where patients might lose motivation, the enjoyment and thrill of riding motivate individuals to persevere through pain and discomfort. The act of accomplishing something that many able-bodied people may shy away from is, in itself, a valuable benefit for those with disabilities. Benefits include enhanced flexibility, improved balance, increased muscle strength, enhanced coordination, access to recreational opportunities, boosted self-esteem, and greater confidence.
Therapeutic Horsemanship
Therapeutic horsemanship sessions, held in the barn and arena, guide participants through tailored activities. Offered to partner organizations working with various groups, including foster children, victims of abuse, and schools catering to high personal attention needs, sessions cover ground training, equine first aid, grooming, identifying horse parts, and tacking/leading a horse.
Program goals span physical improvement, social and relationship skills, responsibility, cognitive functioning, environmental education, increased self-awareness, confidence building, personal empowerment, and respect/self-control/boundaries. Both our therapeutic riding and horsemanship programs instill confidence in participants, particularly those facing disabilities or mental health challenges. Partnering with these powerful animals empowers individuals to gain control, fostering increased self-esteem.
Therapeutic Horsemanship for PTSD/Trauma
This program combines basic horsemanship techniques taught in our standard therapeutic horsemanship program and adds additional focus on the restorative power of horses. Participants, including Veterans, First Responders, and adults living with PTSD, engage in experiential learning over five weeks to build self-awareness and the ability to recognize and process emotions. Throughout these five weeks, participants will discover the importance of being present and mindful. Horses can serve as a mirror to our emotions, reacting to participants' emotions, and helping develop skills such as boundary setting, mindfulness, and awareness of nonverbal communication.
Our highly trained instructors also take on a different role in this program, going from teacher to facilitator. This shift in technique allows participants to feel as if they are being self-guided and connecting with their equine partner, with the support of a professional to help them reach their goals.
Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
Pegasus is actively engaged in providing community outreach and public education programs involving equines, with a focus on serving diverse groups. The organization has successfully partnered with various organizations, initially focusing on disadvantaged youth and later expanding to include trauma survivors, adults with developmental disabilities, and other individuals at risk.
The programs offered by Pegasus are designed to be highly customizable and scalable based on the resources of the partner agencies. These sessions are conducted by PATH-certified therapeutic riding instructors in collaboration with the staff from the partnering agencies. Noteworthy partnerships include those with schools specializing in children with disabilities and challenges, such as Shrub Oak International, The Westchester School, and St. Christophers. Along with agencies such as Westchester ARC and SPARC.
Pegasus emphasizes the importance of introducing every new partner to its mission by providing education on Equine-Assisted Services (EAS). This involves educating the partner agency's staff on EAS and providing insights into what the participants, especially children, will experience when working with the horses. The organization believes in the effectiveness of hands-on learning as the best tool to convey the benefits of its programs.
Furthermore, Pegasus actively engages with the broader community through several hosted events throughout the year. These events serve as opportunities for the public to explore Pegasus, meet the equine herd, and gain a deeper understanding of the organization's programs and services. Importantly, these community events are inclusive, welcoming both able-bodied individuals and those with special needs, fostering an environment where everyone can participate and enjoy the experience.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
Religious Affiliation:Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.
Auction Donation:Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.
