MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Safe Haven Equine Rescue and Retirement Home, Inc. is a non-profit organization, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and dedicated to the welfare of horses. Our goal is to rescue abused, neglected, or distressed horses. We work to bring these rescued horses back to optimal health and to find them loving homes. In some cases, due to age or disability, a horse will not be able to be adopted. For these horses Safe Haven Equine Rescue and Retirement Home, Inc. will provide a home where they can peacefully live out the rest of their life with dignity.

     1. Safe Haven Equine Rescue - Barn (Main)

Horse Rescue, Rehabilitation, Retraining & Re-homing:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     Law Enforcement Seizures: We investigate calls of neglect, collect evidence, assist in the pick up during a seizure, and testify in court. These steps allow us to work closely with law enforcement officers to help save horses from neglect.
     A seizure in December of 2017 from Upshur County is an example of this service. We were called by law enforcement to pick an unknown number of animals on 98 acres of land. Upon arriving we saw 2 dead calves on the ground close to the gate and several animals running around. We searched the land and found a total of 16 animals (1 Appaloosa horse, 2 miniature horses, 1 bull, 1 heifer, 1 calf, 4 donkeys and 6 sheep) alive but in poor health. We also found an additional 5 animals dead on the property. While on site we documented the animals, land and carcasses of the dead animals. We removed and housed all 16 animals while waiting for a court date. All animals received a check up from a Veterinary who in turned wrote a report on the condition of the animals. During the hearing Safe Haven did testify as to the conditions of the property and animals. Due to the hard work we put into the case all 16 animals were removed from the owner permanently. We are now working on rehabilitating these animals so that they can be adopted.
     
     In the summer of 2019 we assisted Law Enforcement in the removal of over 150 horses from an unreputable rescue and boarding facility. With the assistance of the Humane Society, we were able to care for and place all horses back to their rightful owners or transfer to other rescues through out the country for continued care.
     
     Stray Pick up: When contacted by law enforcement - Safe Haven will pick up stray horses. We will hold and care for them according to stray laws in Texas. Sometimes the owners cannot be located; when this happens, Safe Haven will find a new loving family for the horse.
     Macks was a stray we picked up in 2016. He was just a baby left all by himself. The Sheriff's Department tried to find his owners with no success. After the hold time expired Macks was turned over to Safe Haven where he grew into a people loving 2-year-old. He now has a family that loves him dearly and a huge pasture to run in.
     
     Emergency Disaster Rescue: Safe Haven has a trained emergency rescue team that can respond to a number of different situations. These situations can include natural disasters (flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, etc.), searching for animals in these disaster areas, motor vehicle accidents involving a horse and/or trailer, Veterinarian or Owner needing help lifting a horse that is down due to injury or illness, rescuing a trapped horse that has fallen into a confined space, and many more.
     In 2017, Safe Haven’s emergency rescue team responded to calls for help seven times. Three deployments were made by teams members to help search and rescue animals during Hurricane Harvey, twice team members helped lift and transport injured horses, so that a Veterinary could care for them and on two occasions in 2017 Safe Haven assisted first responders with accidents involving horses in trailers.

Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Educational Programs: One of the goals that Safe Haven sets for itself every year is to educate future owners in the proper care of horses. Through these programs we spread the word about what Safe Haven does and how people can help or get involved.
     We invite various groups including: FFA, 4-H, school (we have seen an increase in home schooled children), church, girl and boy scouts, and even individual families, to come to our facility and learn about basic horse care and all that Safe Haven provides for neglected and abused horses. We cover topics such as feeding, grooming, safe handling, the abc's of a rescue. We can tailor our presentation to any specific group including topics that will earn boy or girl scouts different badges.
     
     Community Outreach: Supporting our community is very important to all the Board Members at Safe Haven. Not just because we rely on them for their support but because it is the RIGHT thing to do.
     We have different programs that fall under community outreach. One example would be our ‘Keeping Horses At Home’ Program. We understand that everyone falls on hard times and during these times a little help can go a long way. To help those in need we started a program called "Keeping Horses At Home". During 2017 we were able to help keep 17 horses in their homes with their families during hard times.

Kill Pen: The ownership and custody of the equine is transferred to the organization by acquiring the equine from a kill pen.
Surrender (Hardship): The ownership and custody of the equine is relinquished to the organization by its owner/trainer/responsible agent with or without the use of an intake document.
Seizure: The ownership and custody of the equine is transferred to the organization as a result of the equine being seized by law enforcement or another agency and removed from the owner.
Abandonment: The ownership and custody of the equine is transferred to the organization as a result of the equine being abandoned by the owner or the owner was unable to be located.
Return: The equine was previously a part of the organization, was adopted, and ownership and custody of the equine has been transferred back to the organization.
Transfer: The custody of the equine is transferred within an organization or from one organization to another non-profit or foster organization to provide retirement, retraining, rehabilitation and/or adoption services with no change in ownership.
