Johnny Ritt
Our Equine Ambassador
Every so often, a truly remarkable rehabilitation case comes our way. Meet Johnny Ritt, a talented racehorse who earned nearly half a million dollars in his impressive five-year career. Unfortunately, Johnny's final race ended in a horrible accident, where he fell over another horse, resulting in a severely wrenched back. But don't worry, this incredible gelding received top-notch care at The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center, and then spent six months at New Beginnings Thoroughbreds for further rehabilitation. Despite the setbacks, Johnny's spirit remains strong, and he continues to inspire everyone around him with his resilience and intelligence, relying on stalls walls for support and not laying down for months in the beginning. We're confident that with time, patience, and the right care, Johnny will make a full recovery and find a new purpose in life, perhaps even bringing joy to those in need through equine-assisted therapy programs. MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The mission of New Beginnings Thoroughbreds is to retrain and secure well-qualified and loving adoptive homes for off the track thoroughbreds.

Our organization provides programs involved with equine rescue & adoption

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
We are proud of our continued work over the last year to rehab, rehome, and retrain thoroughbreds and find their adoptive homes.
     
     In recent years, we have become a haven for some horses leaving the racetrack who need extensive rehab or possible retirement homes. These horses have few options for placement and it is a joy to fill this need for these special horses. Keeping them for years can limit our ability to take in other horses and contribute to our funding with adoption fees and donations that often come in with a horse. We are not currently a sanctuary and continue to search for permanent homes for these horses. We have considered establishing a retirement or sanctuary arm of the program. We will be doing research on how this could impact our organization.
     
     We have been successful in caring for these horses with special care or rehab needs while continuing to take in, retrain, and rehome horses who are more easily adopted out. Through funding from grants, fundraising, and our supporters we are sustaining our program and horses are thriving. Our board president has established a plan to start a sponsorship program to support the horses who remain in our care for as long as they need.
     
     The horses who require no or less rehab time continue to receive high-quality care tailored specifically to their needs. Each horse is assessed and worked with in a way that best prepares them for life after the racetrack. We maintain regular contact with adopters.
     
     Some other new developments over the last year include the expansion of resourcing through our accreditation with the TAA and outreach in our new area.  We have received a regular supply of Ulcerguard, which is a significant cost-saving as many thoroughbreds come off the racetrack with ulcers. We have continued to successfully network in the area around the farm to gain new contacts, supporters, and adopters in our new location, and have a new volunteer to assist with regular riding and training.


Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) all interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

1. We place a high value on mutually beneficial interactions between our equines and humans. We are selective in who can interact with our horses and maintain full supervision over all interactions. An emphasis is placed on kindness, concern for the horses' welfare and safety and benefit for the humans as well. The vets, dental professionals, our farrier, and other service providers are all screened to ensure they approach their work with kindness and concern for the horse. Potential adopters are heavily screened before coming out to meet a horse and we monitor interactions closely to ensure the new home will value the comfort and dignity of the horse.
     
     2. All equines in our care have access to clean drinking water at all times, have diets that are tailored to and adjusted regularly based on their needs. They are provided forage or pasture/grass depending on the turnout situation and they are all either turned out with other equines or in close contact with other equines at all times. All have sufficient space to move around comfortably, and all horses have appropriate shelter, either a stall or grass turnout with a shed. We provide regular veterinary care, request veterinary records upon intake, and provide regular farrier visits, and dental care.

Equine Transition Services:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     New Beginnings Thoroughbreds cares for, rehabilitates if needed, and retrains five to six off track thoroughbreds at a time. Horses are donated to the organization by racing trainers, racetrack aftercare programs local to us in NJ, and partner organizations such as other TAA accredited aftercare programs. In 2024, we have been caring for two horses that are no longer rideable, and are working toward finding safe placement or fundraising to provide continued sanctuary. We spend as much time as needed to give horses downtime, work on barn and under saddle retraining, and search for the right adoptive home when we feel each horse is ready. We tailor timing to each horse, and provide any necessary rehab before the horse is available for adoption. We restart horses under saddle to give them basics in non racing walk, trot, canter (and introduction to jumping if appropriate). The work cannot be done without a team of professionals and we work closely with our vet and farrier and other equine care providers (pemf, chiropractor) to determine any limitations a horse may have and disclose all information to potential adopters. We match horses with the best possible adopters, maintain contact, and have a contract retaining ownership for 1 year following adoption. We are a TAA Accredited Organization since 2019. In 2024 we celebrated our ten year anniversary.

Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Our organization has worked with organizations such as the Retired Racehorse Project, the PA Horse Expo and CANTER to educate the public about the value and extraordinary traits of the thoroughbred breed. We have participated in breed demos and clinic at the Pennsylvania Horse Expo in front of an audience of nearly 1000 people, and show off the versatility and strengths of retired racehorses for second careers. Our directors have volunteered at the RRP Thoroughbred Makeover to support the mission of retraining and rehoming thoroughbreds while also making valuable connections. We promote the breed via social media and we also work to create relationships with racing connections to ensure awareness of our ability to take in horses after racing. We recently moved to a new facility which has given us exposure to a new audience and area. In 2024 we took an adoptable horse to a newly formed all thoroughbred show held in NJ, and she found an adoptive home as a result.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered. 

Auction Donation:
Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter. 

POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
    The owner of a potential equine is interviewed over the phone or in person prior to seeing the equine
    The equine is evaluated at its place of residence
    The owner completes an application/contract which constitutes the agreement between the owner and our organization when the equine is acquired from the equine's owner other than by seizure or by abandonment

We work to assess each horse an individual. We are fortunate to work with off track thoroughbreds who have already had a lot of training in their first career. We work to build skills for their second career which may be at a slower pace, and often focus on how they can succeed with regular barn life (introduce to cross ties and live slower paced life than the track). We also work closely with our vet and farrier to be sure horses are physically ready for work. We would like to expose the two non rideable horses to things they may encounter as therapy horses to see if that could be an option for placement.

POLICIES: RE-HOMING

Our organization has the following re-homing (adoption/purchase) policies and procedures in place:
    All potential adopters/purchasers complete a written contract which constitutes the agreement between our organization and the new owner

Horse Health Care/Barn Management Records: What system is used to collect and store health/horse care records?

There is a boarding contract and the board charged to the program is significantly less that the price charged to other boarders. Any discussions of board and training payments are not voted on by Nicole McKinley or Michelle Horgan
