MISSION & PROGRAMS
Mission:Dreams on Horseback's mission statement is "enriching lives with horses." We carefully select horses suited to participating in therapeutic riding lessons and equine assisted learning activities. These special partners provide the basis for every program we conduct at our center, be it the sixty therapeutic lessons given each week, the military based programming, or our vocational training for at-risk youth and young adults with developmental disabilities.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:In keeping with our mission statement, our programs are developed to advance the mission of "enriching lives with horses." The Dreams on Horseback’s Board of Directors in 2022 advanced the SWAT analysis process which created a vision of expanding capacity, broadening our financial resources, and celebrating an integrated culture. A strategy was developed that focuses on expanding the capacity of our organizational impact, envisioning a future that creates $885,000 annually to amplify impact, and creating an internal culture that celebrates all programming equally while growing our supported employment staff for individuals with disabilities.
We are working toward these three goals with the work being done to add a $500,000 barn expansion that will not only provide temperature controlled, handicapped accessible space for our participants, but will provide five new stalls that have indoor-outdoor runs for our horse partners. We are also working to increase our donated monies through donor retention strategies and community outreach to new potential donors. These strategies are put in place to create a long-term sustainable model of support.
We are also working to increase our program capacity with plans to open an additional two hours of therapeutic riding at our facility. In addition to growth in our therapeutic riding program, we experienced an increase of 250% growth in school related programming as we are now working with six local districts to provide a social emotional learning program for their students.
In addition, the impact of our Military Connections program has grown. In the fall of 2022 we implemented a Women's Warriors program to address the needs of women with suicidal ideation. This program has drawn local and what we hope will be national attention from the VAs and beyond.
Dreams on Horseback attributes its ability to raise funds to our reputation as an impactful and thoughtfully managed non-profit. Our sustainability is assured through growing partnerships with organizations like The Ohio State University. We are also supported by The Crane Group, ADP, Healthcare Logistics, Morgan Stanley, Discover and Rocky Brands. We have also enjoyed the support of national grant makers such as Autism Speaks, American Quarter Horse Association, Disabled Veterans National Foundation, and the Equus Foundation which complements strong local support. Our collaborations with Gahanna Jefferson, Groveport Madison, New Albany, and Hilliard Public Schools, along with Columbus Academy help guarantee the spread of our influence throughout Central Ohio which should attract additional support. We also are deepening our relationship with PATH, International whose endorsement will lend itself to sustainability. The practices it requires helps eliminate risk to the organization by requiring exemplary safety practices for both horse and rider.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
Dreams on Horseback's instructors partner with horses to provide unique learning experiences that address the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of participants.
Our organization offers services through four primary programs. The first is therapeutic riding lessons which are conducted for children and adults with developmental disabilities or congenital disabilities.
The second is vocational training for teens and young adults with special needs. The daily care our horses require provides a plethora of opportunity for teens and young adults to learn valuable skills to aid in their transition to entry level positions following graduation from high school.
The third program is horse partnered learning - experiential learning exercises that lead to self-discovery. This program is offered to at-risk teens, adults with developmental disabilities, and seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease. Horse partnered learning exercises are designed for participants and our trained professionals to identify participants' personal challenges and help them explore ways to remedy them.
Finally, our fourth program, Military Connections, utilizes all of our horse activity options to address reintegration challenges of military personnel and their family members who are struggling to rebuild their lives after deployment.
In the spring of 2023, we have added two hours of hippotherapy led by a team of occupational therapists.
Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
Dreams on Horseback connects with the community, not only at our therapeutic center, but in and around Blacklick, Ohio. We recently hosted the undergraduate Animal Sciences Club from The Ohio State University. In addition we act as a frequent host of those wishing to learn more about horses and their use in the therapeutic horse industry through our internship program led by Professor Michelle Ganci of Fresno State who works remotely in Columbus, Ohio.
Recently we trailered miniature horses to a theater to greet guests of Philanthropitch where we were able to share horse facts with guests of the event. We also hauled "horse greeters" to our gala where they worked as ambassadors and inspired questions from and connection to gala guests.
We frequently accommodate career exploration requests of local school students. We also host girl scout education workshops at which the girls can earn badges for learning more about the horse and its many uses and needs. In addition, we frequently have “farm days” with Columbus City School students who may have never had the opportunity to encounter a horse otherwise.
Lastly, we host approximately twelve corporate work groups each year that are treated to an equine information session as part of their time with us.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has made equines available for research studies or medical training.

Under the advice of our medical team, we will allow our horses to be medically studied in conjunction with that team's participation in research should that research pose no threat to the animal and possibly yield positive results. Our horse partners have also been used to study the effects of equine partnered experiences on adults with Alzheimer's Disease at The Ohio State University.
