MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The purpose of Ridin' High, Inc. Therapeutic Riding Program is to promote the well-being, functional abilities, and personal development of persons with physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges through participation in Equine Assisted Services, subject to the consent of the participant's medical advisors or other appropriate professional counsel. We provide mounted therapeutic riding, and equine assisted services that include equine assisted learning.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
100% of our total programs and services are equine-related.

         Lindy Fowler has a BS Degree in Education and has taught professionally for many years. She also has extensive experience with equines from growing up on a high-end Morgan farm in Florida and showing throughout her youth. She has also undergone significant training from credentialed instructors on working with persons with disabilities and ACEs. A lifelong teacher, Lindy is especially adept at incorporating learning and social activities into therapeutic riding sessions to improve cognitive and social challenges.



Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     Adaptive (Therapeutic) Riding:
     We offer goal-oriented therapeutic riding lessons for persons with physical, emotional, cognitive, or social challenges, such as Cerebral Palsy, TBI, CVA, learning disabilities, Autism). Lessons are taught by qualified instructors, including those holding PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) certification and/or have qualifications as a Certified Horsemanship Instructor. We serve riders of ages 4-100! We have a staff member with PATH-CTRI certification.
     
     Pony Partners Program
     This program is for children, ages 5-12, with the overarching goal of building academic skills, most notably literacy skills. We use interaction with gentle ponies along with many fun and educational activities to help students with reading, literacy, and horsemanship skills. The program is guided and overseen by a staff member with a Masters in Education (MEd) and a dedicated volunteer with a BS in Early Education.
     
     Therapeutic Unmounted Equine Assisted Activities
     We offer unmounted equine assisted activities and therapies. Participants gain confidence, improve motor planning skills, and increase functional abilities by interacting with the horses during structured groundwork activities under the guidance of qualified instructors. The groundwork activities include natural horsemanship training techniques, long-lining, horse handling/behavior skills, and brushing the horses. Persons of all ages are welcome in this program. It primarily serves those with extreme anxiety, PTSD, or who are of a weight that exceeds our maximum level (200 pounds). Additionally, it is an option for riders who are confined to a wheelchair as they can still lead, train, and interact safely with an equine.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Our community outreach includes:
     *Regular training for volunteers at our facility on best practices for horse behavior/psychology, equine care, handling, training, first aid, nutrition, lameness/disease, and saddle fitting.
     *Provide clinical (fieldwork) experiences for college/university students in occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, and counseling.
     *Organize and provide training for adult volunteers and family members on how to work with trauma survivors (including children with Adverse Childhood Experiences).
     *Provide riding lessons to volunteers and specialized sessions on horse behavior and handling.
     *Present information on our programs and the effectiveness of equine assisted therapies to civic groups.
     *Provide work experience for special needs students from the local high school.
     *Include those with special needs as an active part of the volunteer team, with a goal to promote inclusiveness and community.
     
     Specific programs include:
     
     Community Riding Program. We offer lessons to 'typical' (able-bodied) participants who simply want to learn riding skills. Our quiet horses and experienced instructors can help riders learn horsemanship skills and reach their goals. The lesson monies generated help to support our therapeutic riding program and create sustainability for it.
     
     Summer Day Horse Camps. We offer summer horse camps for children and youth ages 5-16 years old who have undergone Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Trauma-informed care centers around interactive activities with our wonderful therapy horses, relationship-building, and riding. Participants gain confidence and build resilience through carefully-designed, equine-based services.
     
     Horses. Hope. Healing.
     This program focuses on helping participants recover from traumatic events such as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) or PTSD by providing a safe, encouraging environment and positive interaction with the staff and horses. We serve persons of all ages (typically from 4-65 years old) in this program, with an emphasis on working with children and youth. Most persons present with a significant combination of anxiety and depression.
     
     Volunteer Training. We welcome volunteers (able-bodied and special needs) as a means to provide practical assistance to fulfilling our mission, promote education and advocacy for horses, allow for career exploration, help persons fulfill community service requirements, and build community and purpose.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.

Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAININING

Horses are field evaluated by a knowledgeable group, including staff members, experienced (adult) volunteers, and horse-savvy board members. Horses subsequently accepted are on a 90-day trial period, during which the staff and experienced volunteers evaluate and train the horse (under the supervision of the riding director). Normally, the horse is trained 4-5 days/week during this period. As soon as sufficient evaluation / training has been completed, the horse is accepted into the program. This typically takes much less than 90 days.

At Ridin' High we follow AAEP Guidelines for euthanasia. We will ONLY euthanize a horse if the horse is in ongoing, severe pain, the prognosis is extremely poor, and after all reasonable treatment options have been attempted. We treasure our therapy horses, and they are considered valuable members of our 'Ridin' High' community. They are well-loved. Any decision to euthanize a horse would be made after multiple consultations with our veterinary team, staff members, board of directors, and other knowledgeable horse persons. We would have to be convinced that we had exhausted all the reasonable medical options and that euthanasia was the kind and responsible thing to do. (Note: Over the past 10 years, only two horses have had to be euthanized.)


POLICIES: RE-HOMING

View Re-homing Agreement
Our organization has the following re-homing (adoption/purchase) policies and procedures in place:
    All potential adopters/purchasers complete a written contract which constitutes the agreement between our organization and the new owner

Additional information about our rehoming policies and practices:
We are extremely careful about rehoming any of our therapy horses and do everything in our power to ensure they have a safety net of a lifetime, verified home. We ONLY use the following ways of rehoming a horse:
     
     --Placing the horse back with the owner who donated him/her in the first place (as long as the owner has the financial means and verified ability to care for the horse long-term).
     
     --Retirement/rehoming the equine with a horse-experienced member of the staff or adult volunteer who has a suitable home as well as finances to potentially keep the horse for life. There is a contract in this situation and we always know the person extremely well. (Contracts may stipulate immediate transfer of ownership or after a year.) Additionally, this is typically a person who has been involved with our program long-term and has 'fallen in love' with the horse. In a sense, this constitutes a foster trial period at our facility. Additionally, if the person's life situation changes (post-placement) and they are unable to care for the horse, we place the horse in a similar home or bring the horse back to our facility.
     
     --Retirement at our facility. We are limited in space and resources to do this routinely, but we have had a 31-year old mustang who was retired. She was an outstanding therapy horse and had a sponsor for her care until the time she passed from natural causes.
     
     --Donation (with contract) to another PATH nonprofit EAS program. We have strong relationships with other programs in our area and have placed horses with them who are more suitable for their program than ours.
