Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:Bergen County Horse Rescue’s mission is Caring for Horses Mind, Body and Soul. This includes rescuing and rehabilitating horses who have been neglected, abused or sent to slaughter.
As a nonprofit we are run by over 35 dedicated volunteers from the community who perform all necessary tasks (fundraising, mucking stalls, grooming/medical care/exercising horses, leading farm tours) to keep our horses healthy, happy and loved, as well as our farmland.
BCHR started as a boarding facility, Mahrapo Farm Stables, in 1981. At that time the location of the farm was prime territory for major development and was sought by local and state developers. However, many people realized that the farmland was special and wanted to honor and preserve it. After several years our 17 acres received preservation status and now our sacred land will never be threatened.
Once the land was preserved, the real work began. The goals were to insure the integrity
of the farm as well as protect and care for all of the horses, providing a forever home for them, and a sanctuary for neglected and abused horses.
Several of the boarding horses were left behind at the farm by their owners. We realized that these beautiful, gentle creatures deserved a caring home and safe environment, and they became our
original rescue horses.
We created our mission of Caring for Horses Mind, Body & Soul because we understand that horses need more than just physical care. They also need love, a healthy environment, interaction with their
herd and knowledge that they’re safe. This is exactly what our dedicated volunteers provide for our rescues at BCHR. Our horses now have a sanctuary and we have also rescued goats and chickens, as well.
The BCHR has become a vital component of the community, and we have welcomed local groups such as Boy/Girl Scout troops working toward badges (including Eagle Scouts), bar/bat mitzvah candidates from our local temple fulfilling community service, developmentally disabled adults and autistic children who tour the farm, and local companies and organizations who spend the day at the rescue working on farm projects as part of their community outreach initiatives. We also hold annual signature fundraisers such as our Halloween BOO Walk and Horses & Holidays. In addition, we have added new fundraising events to boost our efforts to be able to compensate for inflation and rise of expenses.
We have completed our medical treatment room, which was a huge undertaking that is finally complete! This medical facility on-site allows us to care for our horses and keep a sterile environment when horses need medical attention. The facility provides proper lighting, a sterile environment, necessary equipment, temperature controlled room with a split unit for heating/air conditioning when our horses might need it most. This facility is solely dedicated to medical instances, and our veterinarian has already had to use it a few times... this project has allowed us to take better care of our horses in medical emergencies, which is vital. We have also had the opportunity to showcase our clinic as a learning opportunity to visitors, clubs/organizations, 4-H groups, etc. Our medical clinic has served as an amazing opportunity for us to grow as an organization and continue to educate the public on our mission, the equine industry and general horse knowledge.
In addition, we have been able to improve our facility with some necessary improvements such as new stall flooring, new gates to turnouts, freshly painted barns, etc. Our goals for this year are basically to cover our expenses and expand our fundraising efforts. Costs have been through the roof due to supply/demand and donors have been cutting back on donations with these difficult times that we're currently in. The state of the economy has forced us to rethink our fundraising strategies, seek out more grant opportunities, and get creative when it comes to how we are raising money. It has also allowed us to take a deeper look into our expenses and see how/where we are spending money, and how we can potentially be more strategic when it comes to overall expenses. Overall, we are excited for the year ahead with a lot of new/exciting opportunities on the horizon!
Equine Transition Services:Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement (RRRRR):
Our mission at the Bergen County Horse Rescue is to rehabilitate and protect neglected horses with the assistance of local animal control officers and veterinarians. When possible, we will rehome (adopt out) our horses to responsible, loving homes. By adopting out some of our horses, it allows us to rescue more that are in need. Adoptions are not very common, as it is not easy to find proper homes for our horses, and we are very thorough in making sure their potential adopters are a good fit.
The mind, body, and soul of our horses are what we care about and strive to preserve, and it is our responsibility to provide the proper nourishment for each horse according to the horse’s individual conditions and needs. We make sure this happens by implementing specific health plans and reconditioning programs that strengthen and elevate the mind, body and soul of every horse.
Though various methods are used to improve horse health, the main support horses need is an environment where they can commingle and receive love and care from humans. Horses enrich the lives of many people, so our aspiration is to encourage humanity to invest some thought in these beautiful, sensitive and, unfortunately, mistreated animals.
Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
We provide guided tours and educational demonstrations to special needs adults, tours to girl scouts/boy scouts, and Educational tours to children, families, 4-H groups, special needs adults, etc. We have had several special needs adult living communities take tours of our rescue. In addition to tours, we also educate by demonstrating how to care for a horse, horsemanship, anatomy of a horse, etc. We do not provide "therapy" programs currently,but we believe that being in the presence of horses is healing and therapeutic in its own way.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
Religious Affiliation:Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.
Auction Donation:Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.

We take many precautions to ensure the safety of both our horses and volunteers. We have all of the proper insurance coverage, volunteer waivers, Bylaws, volunteer handbook, etc. If volunteers are training the horses, we make sure they are training properly after the horse has been evaluated on all levels. We believe in natural horsemanship and do not "break" our horses.
Regarding board members, we have 3 official/voting members of our Board. Those three members are also registered on our IRS/990 documentation. In total, we have 6 members of the leadership team at BCHR, but only 3 out of the 6 are technically board members/voting members.
