Rescued in 2022, Remus came to Horse Haven when his family could no longer care for him and his two pasture mates due to a life change. Severely emaciated upon arrival, he required immediate veterinary care and nourishment. With love and rehabilitation, Remus transformed into a healthy, sweet-natured horse who adores attention. His gentle personality and fondness for kids make him the perfect representative of our mission. Whether meeting the public or attending events, Remus helps spread awareness about equine rescue and the importance of giving horses like him a second chance.


MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The mission of Horse Haven of Tennessee (HHT) is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home God’s neglected or abused equine through programs of shelter, adoption, and education across the state of Tennessee.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Horse Haven of Tennessee is proud to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year! This is a huge accomplishment as we are the pioneer equine welfare organization that services all 95 counties in the State of Tennessee. Since our inception, we have helped rescue over 1,300 horses! We have seen our fair share of triumphs and challenges over the years. Our biggest challenge has been not having a facility that we can call ours. We have been blessed over the years with people who support our mission allowing us to use their facilities at a no-cost or a low-cost lease. This year we had a generous donor and supporter donate a large facility to us, free and clear! This is a huge blessing and allows us to lay down our roots. This property has over 40 acres, several existing buildings on site, and a world of opportunities! We are working with barn builders, engineers, and architects to ensure that we are using the property to the best of our abilities. We are in the process of planning and building a 20 stall barn to include an indoor training space, large 12x12 stalls, and a clean working environment for our volunteers and horses.
     
     Our goal is to roll out a capital campaign in May 2024. We will partnering with local businesses, media outlets, and our donor base to raise awareness for our new facility. We have raised one-third of our total funds even before our campaign rolls out! We have a strong presence in our community and with their support we will have our barn built by summer 2024.
     
     We have worked hard in educating our animal control officers, state officials, and district attorneys. In 2023, we were able to assist the counties in court cases to ensure a more swift surrender of the equine we rescued. We have worked hard to be the first call that law enforcement makes to help with equine rescues. We are always ready at a moment’s notice. We have a rescue team of over 30 volunteers who are highly trained and qualified to help with the many facets of equine rescue. With a new facility, we will have plenty of room to host training events for our county and state officials as well as our rescue team.
     
     Our staff is currently in the process of becoming certified as Expert Animal Cruelty Investigators through the Law Enforcement Training Institute of University of Missouri Extension. This certification allows us to be certified as an expert witness in court.
     
     Since we are not state or federally funded, we host several large fundraisers annually that are open to the public. Each year we are surpassing our fundraising goals!
     
     Our 2024-2025 goals are to build our new barn, construct run-in shelters in pastures, perimeter and pasture fencing installed, and have our facility ready to move in by fall of 2024. We will announce our move and capital campaign to the public in May 2024. We have raised one-third of our capital campaign and we will raise the final two-thirds by our large donors, business sponsorships, and hosting fundraising events at our new facility.
     
     By having our forever home, we will be able to expand our offered equine programs, training, and elevate the housing for our equine. With our long-standing presence in the state, we will continue educating officials, equine owners, and the general public. We will accomplish these goals by hosting annual events at our facility.



Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

Our staff and volunteers are highly qualified in the daily care and training of our rescue equine. We color code our horses based on their skills and abilities and we do the same for our volunteers. We want to ensure that our handlers are paired well with the equine they are caring for in the barn. New volunteers learn the “HHT Way” of handling so all of our equine are handled the exact same from day to day.
     
      Our equine manager and our team of veterinarians work together to start a refeeding plan tailored to each horse’s age and health. Our equine receive immediate veterinarian care. They have an initial exam, CBC panels, fecal samples, Coggins, and vaccinations. We monitor the equine’s feed, hay, water intake, and overall health throughout their rehabilitation process.
     
     Once the equine are cleared by our veterinarian for groundwork, our equine manager will work with them from the ground up to determine their skills and abilities. If they are sound for riding, and have cleared the basics of groundwork, she will evaluate them under saddle. She will work with them on any vices they may have. She will ensure they are able to lead, tie, load, stand for the farrier, and be safe for adopters to handle. We track each equine’s progress via barnmanager.com and we keep hard copies of every record.
     
     If there are any signs of distress or discomfort, the equine will be evaluated by our equine manager and veterinarian to determine the cause of discomfort. After the evaluations, a protocol is put in place specific to that equine’s needs and health.
     
     Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome God’s abused and neglected equine through programs of shelter, adoption, education, and assistance. Both equine and human safety is a priority within our barn. We train not only our horses, but our volunteers from the ground-up so handling is consistent among shifts. We ensure our horses placed in our adoption program are safe for adopters to handle, transport, and train. We utilize the ASPCA’s Right Horse “Basic Behaviors Profile” to help pair equine with their human partners.
     
     2.) We have an intake protocol for every equine that we bring into our barn based on body condition score. Every equine is fed free-choice hay, given clean and palatable drinking water 24/7, and is placed in a pasture and has a large 12x12 stall to safely move around. A refeeding plan is put into place after every equine has been evaluated by our team of veterinarians. Our stalls are a mixture of solid sides and bars. Every equine at our facility can see, hear, smell, and interact with other equine. We feel it necessary to provide small herd turnouts so equine are able to socially interact on a daily basis.


Equine Transition Services:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     HHT assists law enforcement officials by transporting and caring for horses that are seized during criminal abuse and neglect cases. The horses are then cared for while the cases are litigated in court.
     
     Programs and services include:
     1) Assisting state and local authorities in a variety of situations.
     2) Working with local trainers to provide equine training in ground manners and basic acceptable behavior.
     3) Helping owners who desire to be responsible but might not have the means to provide for their equine.
     4) Providing workshops and information to help bring awareness and understanding of equine.

Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Examples of community outreach and/or public education:
     -- HHT is always learning new things about our equine friends. Providing education to volunteers helps bring awareness and responsibility to everyone involved with equine.
     -- We host law-enforcement training on site. The law-enforcement officers receive training from our equine manager about proper handling, retrieving, and loading techniques of equines.
     -- We offer a “Second Chance” program, where we partner with local horse trainers to take on some of the horses who need more attention to become more adoptable.
     -- We offer a free/low cost gelding program called "Studs to Buds"
     -- Our "Helping Hoof" program helps owners feed their animals who have fallen on hard times until they can rehome them or get back on their feet due to illness or financial loss.
     --Our Ultimate Act of Compassion assist with the cost of humane euthanasia and disposal of horses that responsible owners are not able to provide for.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has made equines available for research studies or medical training.
Please explain where and for what purpose equines are/were provided to use in research or medical training. 
     We have worked closely with the University of Knoxville College of Veterinary Medicine over the years. When we have an animal that needs to be humanely euthanized we allow them to us their bodies for training purposes AFTER they are humanely euthanized. We have occasionally participated in a study they may be doing such as tracking sugar levels of our horses in regards to their nutrition and forage. We would never allow anything that could bring pain or discomfort to our horses but if we can help better another horses life we are all for it.

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter. 


POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
