MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Promise Landing Farm is a creative engine for inclusivity, engaging community members with and without special needs in meaningful interactions with each other and their equine partners to foster a community where everyone is valued and included.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
100% of our total programs and services are equine-related.

Our organization CURRENTLY uses satellite, overflow, foster, and/or outreach facilities which adhere to all the policies, procedures and practices of our organization. Facility information is provided for the organization's main, satellite and overflow facilities.


Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
In 2023, Promise Landing Farm provided more than 3000 hours of equine-assisted services to 160 participants. More than 135 volunteers contributed over 4200 hours of service, a contribution of time valued at more than $145,000. We also hosted our first-ever fundraising gala, which netted $60,000 for horse care and program costs and introduced a new community of supporters to our program and facility.
     
     We provide EAS services to more participants than the number of clients we have because we host multiple events and organizations throughout the year. We had a Jude House event with 18 participants, Scouting America formerly Boy Scouts of America with 10 participants, Maryland Family Resource had 10 participants, Access Adventure had 6 participants, the Spring Horse Show had approximately 40 participants, the PVDA show had 40 participants and Maryland Adaptive Day filled our barn with many community sponsors.
     
     Even with the rapid expansion of our programs, Promise Landing Farm maintains a waiting list for our services. In 2024 our overarching goal is to build organizational capacity so we can take the next step to serve more members of our community without compromising the safety and happiness of our horses, participants, volunteers, and staff. To that end we are investing in our herd, pursuing the right next horses to add to our program and introducing them to equine-assisted services in a compassionate manner. We are also investing in our staff, providing continuing education to help them best serve our clients and achieve new certifications. We are also working with several volunteers who are interested in pursuing instructor certification, which will allow us to teach more lessons in the future. And we are investing considerable time in our development infrastructure, to allow us to build the relationships and raise the funds to continue providing high-quality services to our community.

Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:
1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines.
     Promise Landing Farm conducts all equine-assisted services in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions. Students and volunteers are taught to consider the horse's needs and point of view from their first visit to the farm. Individuals leading programming are credentialed by PATH International or directly supervised by a credentialed professional and abide by PATH's Code of Ethics. As a PATH Intl Premier Accredited Center, all activities are conducted in accordance with PATH standards, which place a high value on safety for both equines and humans.
     
     Promise Landing Farm provides high-quality care for our equines, and this care is verified by annual state and county licensing visits as well as periodic PATH Intl Premier Accreditation site visits. All equines have stalls where they are fed separately, and all equines receive daily group turnout (unless an unusual situation occurs, such as injury, severe weather, etc.). Diets are forage-first and supplemented with commercial feed products, supplements, and/or medications as needed to maintain body condition and achieve optimal health. Water is always available, both inside and out. Our equine care team includes professional support from our veterinarians, farrier, dentist, saddle fitters, bodyworkers, and nutritionist in addition to our highly qualified staff who provide daily care with the support of volunteers.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     Our adaptive horsemanship program is dedicated to teaching horsemanship and riding skills that promote independence, intellectual engagement, and physical strength to individuals with disabilities. Our lesson plans are adapted to fit each individual’s unique goals and needs. Riding skills begin with the basics and follow a specific and sensible progression to create balanced and well rounded riders.
     
     Every lesson is taught with an emphasis on communication, task analysis, specific praise, and lots of how’s and why’s to ensure understanding and to build upon cognitive skills. With these criteria in mind, lesson plans are designed weekly with a focus around one or two riding skills and will include games and activities to reinforce the skill, as well as opportunities for social interaction among riders.
     
     Riders of all needs and capabilities are welcome at PLF. PLF strives to create an inclusive atmosphere open to riders of all abilities, where physical, emotional, and social needs can be met. We find lessons on horseback are extremely beneficial for students working on skills including assertiveness, emotional awareness, empathy, stress tolerance, problem-solving, self-actualization, independence, self-esteem, social responsibility, interpersonal relationships, body awareness, balance, and muscle tone. We encourage our riders to participate throughout our facility, join social groups and clubs, and be active members of the community.
     
     A dually certified occupational therapist/therapeutic riding instructor provides occupational therapy services in the equine environment, sometimes incorporating equine movement as a treatment strategy, on a limited basis.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Promise Landing Farm offers a community riding program for individuals with and without disabilities who do not require volunteer support to safely participate with equines. At present participants are mostly members of our volunteer corps, and activities are primarily mounted with some unmounted instruction.
     
     The state of Maryland has a mandatory community service requirement for high school graduation, and we are able to sign off on those student service learning hours, as well as a variety of other situations in which community service hours might need verification.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.

Additional information about our intake, assessment & training policies and practices:
Our organization is not a rescue. We provide equine-assisted services only. As such, we only accept healthy horses with a known vaccination history and a current Coggins. Horses coming from out of state must have a CVI/health certificate for interstate transport as required by law. Horses being donated to our organization or purchased by our organization have a pre-purchase exam completed by a veterinarian. A determination about the need for quarantine and length of that quarantine is based on an understanding of the horse's history and risk profile.
     
     Our facility is designed with a designated quarantine wing.
     
     We only lease/accept/purchase horses in reasonable body conditions (4-7) and then aim to maintain them in the 5-6 range. We pay close attention to body condition and know how to utilize the Henneke score but we don't have a need for a formal scoring and re-scoring process.
