Dutch (Whiskey's Pride)
Our Equine Ambassador
SLC welcomed Dutch to the herd in late August of 2024. He is a Rocky Mountain horse, which is a relatively new breed developed in the late 19th century in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. Dutch displays the breeds preferred coloring of chocolate with a flaxen mane and he is naturally “gaited”, meaning he has a smooth-to-ride, intermediate speed, four-beat gait. Before coming to SLC, Dutch was well-trained and used for pleasure and trail riding, however, the circumstances on how he came to SLC were difficult. At only 13 years old, he was very overweight with regional adiposity cresty neck, fat pones at tail head and metabolic reaction to excessive caloric intake. He was presented to Dr. Robert Ball of Bracken Equine clinic in San Antonio, Texas, in August 2024 with Grade 3 lameness of left front and shortened stride on right hind. Dutch also exhibited painful reaction to digital pressure of the annular ligament on both front legs, non- weight bearing. Dr. Ball’s recommendation was to severely restrict his diet for weight loss and to ultrasound each leg to see if there were a traumatic injury responsible for the inflammation and fluid retention in and around the annular ligament. His owner could not control Dutch’s caloric intake due to the situation at the stable and was unable to cover the expense of the medical treatment requirements. The owner surrendered Dutch to Dr. Ball, who in turn called the Executive Director of The Saddle Light Center and explained Dutch’s situation. He spoke very highly of Dutch’s temperament and disposition and how respectful he was of people and their space in spite of the pain during standing, walking and examinations. Our Executive director agreed to visit Dutch at Dr. Ball’s clinic and decided to bring Dutch to our stable. An appointment for ultrasound of both legs and X-ray of Sesamoid bones was scheduled. The results showed no evidence of traumatic injury of either annular ligaments, sesamoid bones or the deep flexor tendon. Dr. Ball stated that Dutch needed a highly restricted diet with coastal hay 3 times/day, small amount of Alfalfa hay primarily for digestion and protein and a trace vitamin and mineral product. He would need time to lose weight to reduce the inflammation and would need space restriction to minimize his movement. Dutch has been with us for 2 months and he has lost 110 lbs., is in great shape, walks without lameness, and stands restful without pain. He is accepting his new routine of walking from his 40’ x 40’ pen into the barn for socialization and meals with the rest of the herd, stands quietly in his stall while volunteers groom him and pick his feet. He will be the perfect therapy horse: calm demeanor, attentive and inquisitive attitude, very social disposition with a great personality and temperament. We are your Guardian! He knew there was a great job opportunity waiting for him.


MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Our mission is to provide equestrian therapy for children, teenagers, and adults that have a disability including neurological, orthopedic, learning, and emotional, as well as a wide range of others. Our goal is to inspire our riders to achieve accomplishments previously considered beyond their capabilities.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
100% of our total programs and services are equine-related.

Our organization does not CURRENTLY use satellite, overflow, foster, and/or outreach facilities.


Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
We operate 43 weeks in the year and we follow San Antonio Independent School System's calendar. During each calendar session we allow 2 or 3 cancellations (depending on weeks) without charge. If additional cancellations are needed we ask that the parent/caregiver pay for the sessions, as we don't have individuals waiting to jump in when someone cancels a riding session. This strategy allows us to better estimate our rider revenue. However, if SLC cancels due to weather, the rider is not charged with that cancelation.
      We have maintained 12 horses in our program, we have added an additional Instructor, soon to be certified by PATH. We have maintained 52 riders each week and we have an extensive wait list. We do not have large groups of riders instead each Instructor has 2 riders in each hour. This allows the instructor to focus and address the needs of each client. The Therapists provide a one-on-one private session for Hippotherapy and the objective is to improve each client's functional mobility.
      We keep the cost of our service affordable to parents as we do not file for insurance coverage. The rider's fees only cover 48% of our expenses, the rest has to come from donations, grants and our yearly fundraising event. We will have the same focus this coming year. By providing excellent service the funds will come. To quote Socrates: "Wealth does not bring about excellence, but excellence makes wealth and everything else good for men".



Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

Since the horses are our main asset for our business, they are our main focus in care and nutrition. The horses are what riders, families and volunteers first see when they come to our facility. They are the window into our business and they represent us well! When a rider applies to participate in our program, and evaluation is performed of the rider's physical and emotional abilities and then is matched with the right horse. The rider stays with the same horse for a long time and during this time a strong bond and relationship develops that truly benefits the rider.
      We have 3 large paddocks and there are 4 horses in each paddock and their temperament and disposition is evaluated so they can be matched into the correct herd environment. Each paddock has a herd leader with #2,3 and 4. Our horses have formed very strong bonds within each paddock but also with the entire herd of the 3 paddocks. They are very content with this arrangement and when it's time to come into the barn for feeding, they line up by the gate #1 and 2, #3 and 4 stand back waiting for their turn. This is an acceptable routine and there is no fighting at the gate. Everyone is safe including the horse handlers and volunteers.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     We provide Therapeutic Horseback Riding to individuals with a diagnosis, such as ADD, ADHD, Austism, Developmental Delay, Downs Syndrome, Epilepsy, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Intellectual and Learning Disabilities. This service is provided by a PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, who teaches equestrian skills to an individual who can sit on a horse unassisted, follow instructions and exhibit appropriate behavior to be safe on a horse. We currently have two (2) PATH instructors with a third (3) one completing her training.
     
     We also provide Hippotherapy to individuals who are referred to us by Physicians and can benefit from the horse's movement to produce certain responses in the clients. This service is provided by a licensed PT and PTA. Our licensed therapists are PATH Registered Therapists in Hippotherapy. The diagnosis we see for Hippotherapy are Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Developmental Disability, Down Syndrome, Genetic Disorders, Head Trauma/Brain injury, ADHD and Spina Bifida.
     
     Our client population is diverse, including Hispanic, Asian, African/American and Caucasian clients. The age groups represented are: 2-5 0%, 6-10 20%, 11-18 25%, 19-30 37%, 31-50 14% and 51-65 4%. Community Outreach and/or Public Education:

     We provide internships for the local Universities providing Allied Health programs, such as Pre-PT, Pre-OT, Kinesiology and adaptive sports departments. We also give lectures about our program to local organizations such as the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. We also participate in exhibits at local volunteer fairs.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.

Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

The horse is evaluated at initial visit and assessment on his/her temperament, disposition and movement (without a rider). 30 days after a horse arrives at our facility, an evaluation made of the horse's acceptance of the new environment and routine. The horse is hand-walked around the facility in order to introduce new sights and sounds and start building trust from the ground before being saddled and ridden.

Additional information about our rehoming policies and practices:
Since all of our horses have an owner (except 1) the owner will be asked to take the horse back home and fully retire the horse. If they cannot, then they will be asked to assist in finding the horse a retirement place where he/she can be used as a companion for another horse or as a lead line pony for younger/smaller children. Any exercise/riding performed will be stated on the application depending on the rider's skills and age and health of the equine. The horse shall not be bred.
