Our Equine Ambassador
In full view from the street, Coco and her field mate Maguire were penned up in a pipe corral staring and nickering to passersby, pleading for help. Fed poor quality hay on rare occasions, the desperately hungry pair were reduced to chewing on the oak trees that surrounded their prison. Several neighbors heard their cries and complained to the Sheriff’s Department. In December of 2013, a deputy from the department tried working with the owners to improve the care and feeding of this neglected pair. The owners made promise after promise to step up and regularly feed Coco and Maguire adequate hay rations to keep them in good health. On each visit to check on the horses, however, the frustrated Deputy Sherriff found no improvement in their feeding schedule, and the horses continued to look thinner on each subsequent visit to the property. The owners were given an ultimatum. They could either surrender the horses to the Equamore Sanctuary or go to jail. On December 27, 2013, staff and volunteers from the Sanctuary transported Coco and Maguire to their new and permanent home where they now thrive.

The Equamore Foundation provides rescue and sanctuary for neglected, abused, and abandoned horses and donkeys who have no other alternative for their care.

EQUINE SPONSORSHIP CAMPAIGN UPDATE
     The total income from the sponsorship program in 2024 was equal to 26 equines being fully sponsored. We have reached 45.6% of the goal of having all the Sanctuary residents fully sponsored.
     
     
     FUNDRAISING UPDATE AND GOALS
     Equamore’s journey toward sustainability continues. These are some figures supporting our progress:
     Because of our generous donors and growing donor base, fundraising efforts in 2024 were wonderfully successful.
     • Contributions increased by 29%.
     • “Direct Cost of Care Underwriting Program” revenues increased by 12.6%.
     • “Equine Sponsorship Program” revenues increased by 24.4%.
     • “Capital Campaign” decreased the mortgage balance by $34,400 leaving a mortgage balance of $300,600.
     
     While the revenue increased by 13.07%, the Sanctuary expenses increased by just 1.7%.
     
     Equamore’s three goals for 2025 are:
     • Build on the momentum of the Equine Sponsorship Program until all our residents are fully sponsored.
     • Pay off or refinance our existing mortgage of $300,600 by November 15th of this year.
     • Recruit underwriters for “Direct Cost of Care.”
     
     This is a breakdown of the Foundation’s annual income categories:
     • Non-recurring Donations – 40% of total income
     • Recurring Donations – 8% of total income
     • Equine Sponsorship Program (recurring donations toward the care of an individual equine) – 33% of total income

     Sustainability is the Foundation’s focus for 2025 and the years to follow. Recurring grants and donations are key to Equamore’s success on this journey.



Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) all interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

1) All of the Sanctuary's equines are retired. A small number of the population are trained by employees and one board member under the supervision of the Sanctuary manager/trainer.
     
     Some of the volunteers groom horses under the supervision of the Sanctuary manager/trainer until they demonstrate that they are qualified to perform this task without supervision.
     
     At the events which involve the public such as fundraising events and tours, the participants are never in the stalls or fields with the horses. They are allowed only to visit the equines and are not allowed even near the horses with questionable behavior.

Equine Transition Services:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     The Equamore Foundation Sanctuary provides life-long care to between 55 and 65 equines at any given time. We do not adopt, foster, or sell the equines that are taken into the Foundation's care.
     
     We take in all equines that law enforcement agencies ask us to take from seizures and surrenders. We take in horses from the general public that are poorly cared for, neglected, abandoned, or abused that have no other alternatives.

Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     We offer tours to the general public and onsite events that help educate the public about the problem and plight of unwanted horses. The tours and events help us recruit new donors and volunteers.

     In 2008 we established a program call the "Oregon Hay Bank" which provides feed assistance, veterinary care, and hoof care to responsible horse owners experiencing a temporary setback financially. The goal of this program is to help responsible horse owners keep their horses at home and reduce the number of unwanted horses. The Hay Bank also helps rescues/sanctuaries and law enforcement agencies in times of crisis such as large seizures and natural disasters.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered. 

Auction Donation:
Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter. 


POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
    The owner of a potential equine is interviewed over the phone or in person prior to seeing the equine

Additional information about our intake, assessment & training policies and practices:
We require a health certificate from a veterinarian for all horses coming from out of State. This is also a requirement of the Oregon Agricultural Dept. and we are licensed by the Dept. We do not require any other health records on intake, although oftentimes some records are provided. Incoming horses are quarantined for a minimum of 10 days and this depends on where they are coming from. Horses seized by the Sheriff's Department have a "health check" by a veterinarian by the department of which we receive a copy.
     
     Most of the Sanctuary horses are not ridden because of their age, temperaments, confirmation, and soundness issues. The few horses that are ridden are continuously analyzed for their weight-carrying capabilities taking into consideration their confirmation, age, size, current level of fitness, and levels of training.
     
     The horses that are serviceable are ridden by select staff and volunteers under the instruction and supervision of the Sanctuary's trainer for the purpose of educating and furthering the skills of the horses, riders, and handlers. We teach both horse and riders communication skills (mounted & unmounted) that benefit all involved. Our training methods are all about how the horse functions mechanically, educating the rider to help improve the physical condition of the horse using subtle methods and aids to achieve clear communication and physical well-being.

There are 26 stalls in the main barn (16 of those stalls have runs.)The second barn has 11 stalls with runs. All stalled horses are turned out daily into multiple pastures for exercise and socializing with herd mates. The remainder of the horses are housed in fields with run-in shelters 24/7. The run-in sheds have multiple open stall areas to accommodate the number of horses housed in those fields.

We currently have 55 horses and 2 donkeys in our care. One of the horses "Mister" is owned by a person that boarded Mister at the facility before the Equamore Foundation owned the property in June of 2012. Mister is a private rescue and the owner pays his boarding fee. He is in retirement. We no longer board horses at the facility. Mister is the only remaining boarded horse.
