MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The mission of The Southlands Foundation is to provide a historical and agrarian connection to the community, and cultivate a respect and love for the land and its animals through education, conservation and outdoor recreation.

Our organization provides outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
100% of our total programs and services are equine-related.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
Our organization does not CURRENTLY use satellite, overflow, foster, and/or outreach facilities.
Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
2024 has been a busy and prosperous year for The Southlands Foundation. We have hired a new Executive Director, Program Director and Barn Director. All have years of experience and a dedication to the mission of Southlands. We have engaged in many community-based programs which is the goal of The Southlands Foundation. The Anderson Center for Autism brings a rotating group of participants to the farm to engage in communication and socializing by using our equine friends. This program is supervised by the Anderson Center and a dedicated staff member of Southlands. Daytop Samaritan Village Rehabilitation Center brings their participants to engage with the horses while having discussions to build self-awareness and confidence. This program is run by a tenured Professor of Psychology at Vassar College and a select few volunteers. We also started a partnership with Ramapo for Children which works with children that have social and emotional issues. The clients come to the farm with Ramapo staff members and a dedicated Southlands member to learn about the horses and gain social interactions. We also have a client from Ramapo that volunteers their time with Southlands supervision for barn related chores which promote self-worth, a sense of accomplishment and vocational training. These goals are accomplished and sustained by increasing our Southlands family. We have added new equine trainers and as a result new horses boarded at the facility which brings us to capacity. Lessons are being taught throughout the day by an experienced staff of trainers. We have created an outdoor space for pasture boarded horses. Summer camps and school vacation camps are an additional source of revenue. These programs are very popular and fill to capacity before the camp begins. By increasing our equine population, we have increased our staffing to provide for the needs of the horses. We have a staff member that is working on a PATH International certification to bring equine assisted therapy to the Southlands Foundation. Another avenue is a Read to Ponies program which brings literacy outreach to our barn. By adding these programs, the Southlands Foundation has a clear long term plan for community involvement.



Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) all interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

We have a program director to oversee the programs at the Southlands Foundation. Our program director is also a veterinarian. A barn director and assistant oversee the direct care of the horses. The program director coordinates the use of the horses for every program and riding lesson. Each horse is carefully selected to balance their work and rest time. Certain horses are used primarily with the community programs due to their gentle calm nature. Lesson horses are selected based on the skill level and age of the rider. A horse may be scheduled to work but the barn director or assistant barn manager may see that they are not ready to work and will substitute. The horse trainer has the option of changing horses if they feel a horse is not ready to work. Lessons may be cancelled due to weather conditions for the safety of the horses. This criteria is also used with the clients. For our community based programs, some of the clients will just watch. Some clients are ready and willing to complete any task. We also will cancel lessons or programs for weather related issues or we will move programs to an inside area.
     
     The horses are supervised from sunup to sundown. The barn director and assistant handle and exercise each horse every day. If our veterinarian suggests a horse recover from any injury that horse is not used until the veterinarian confirms they are ready to work. Once the horse is ready to work, the assistant barn manager will ride the horse for a few times for rehabilitation. Our property is 200 acres with plenty of room for the horses to roam outside and forage. Each outdoor pasture has running water and outside shelter. During the winter months, hay is provided outside since forage is scarce. Every horse is turned out daily for socializing and some live outside full time. The veterinarian is the first point of contact if the barn staff see a problem with a horse. Rhinebeck Equine is always available to help us with any medical problem and provide well visit appointments.

Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     The Southlands Foundation teaches horseback riding, horsemanship, and the love, understanding and skillful care of horses to adults and children. We offer horse stables, indoor and outdoor riding arenas, and horse show opportunities.
     
     Our facility is a wildlife preserved area with 200 acres open to the public for miles of trails to ride or walk. In addition to riding lessons for children and adults, we offer a riding camp during the summer with our lesson horses. We also provide a working student program. Members are able to ride at reduced cost based on their involvement in helping with chores around the farm.
     
     The Southlands Foundation, in cooperation with the Anderson Center for Autism, provides equine assisted therapy to adults and youth. The groups come once a week to learn about horses and learn about communicating effectively. Through the Anderson Center, a few clients come to Southlands to assist with the horses on a regular basis under the guidance of Southlands and the Anderson Center.
     
     The Southlands Foundation also conducts an unmounted Horsemanship Program in partnership with Samaritan Daytop Village, a nationally recognized human services organization. Samaritan Daytop provides a rich array of services including substance use treatment, mental health, primary health care and other specialized vocational and employment programs. Participants in the Southlands Horsemanship program meet at the farm weekly, giving them the opportunity to learn about nature, horses, and skills related to farm and animal care.
     
     We also have partnered with Camp Ramapo to offer volunteer/job opportunities for their clients. The clients are given tasks at the farm that they will participate in with success to offer a sense of accomplishment.
     
     The Southlands Foundation has a long history of offering a limited number of stalls to clients who wish to board their horses at our wonderful facility in order to participate in our lesson and training program. We are committed to equine education in both horsemanship and husbandry, and welcome clients who own their own mounts.
     
     Southlands provides quality care in a safe, pleasant, and workmanlike atmosphere. The horses are turned out daily in board fenced paddocks. Our stalls have good ventilation and are partially matted. Stalls are cleaned every morning, including most holidays: they are picked again in the afternoons. Our Barn Manager oversees the deworming and nutrition of the entire herd, with input from veterinarians and nutritionists. Farriers and specialized services such as acupuncture, chiropractic, energy balancing and massage are available on a regular basis.
     
     Our main barn has fire-heat sensing systems with remote continuous monitoring. Theft security systems are in all tack rooms, offices and supply areas, and are remotely monitored. We are fully insured to protect our clients, horses, property and staff.
     
     Our extensive facility includes both indoor and outdoor rings, cross country fences, and an extensive acreage of fields and wooded areas open for mounted adventures. Our trainers share the goal of producing well rounded, soundly educated mounts that are comfortable and safe in a variety of environments.
     
     For those who enjoy competition, we offer our own hunter/jumper and dressage schooling show series and travel to both unrated and rated USEF competitions throughout the year. To broaden the scope of our education, we offer regular clinics with highly regarded professionals in a variety of disciplines.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered. 

Auction Donation:
Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter. 


POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:

At this time, we do not have a volunteer application.  We do not solicit volunteers for the general public.  All volunteers are vetted by board members or by Vassar College which helps with our Daytop program.  The people that volunteer have been around for a very long time.  In the future if we wish to expand our volunteer program, we will be developing an application process.
