MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation, Inc. (ERAF) is a Not-For-Profit 501(c)3 organization devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, and adoption of abused, abandoned, neglected, owner surrendered, and slaughter-bound horses. We work closely with Law enforcement and Animal Care and Control throughout South Florida.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of at-risk equines.
     
     ERAF set out several strategic goals for 2023-2024 including
     1. Launch of special programs including Begin Again and Champions
     2. Addressing property infrastructure & equipment needs
     3. Expand paid/ unpaid human capital resources
     
     1. Our Begin Again program evaluates and prepares our horses for equine-assisted services so that they may be adopted into facilities that provide these services and/or other suitable adoptable homes. The program pairs volunteers with horses to complete a 6-week program modeled on typical PATH-type sessions. The sessions are led by a certified PATH instructor and an equine specialist in coordination with our equine manager.
     
     The initial pilot program was funded by a grant from ASPCA Right Horse with subsequent sessions self-funded through individual donations and grants. To date, five Begin Again equine graduates have been placed in adoptive homes. These include two therapy barns and a facility specializing in youth grief counseling through equine therapy.
     
     The Begin Again program has succeeded for horses limited to groundwork only and/or light walking only by offering adoption opportunities in the widening landscape of equine-assisted services and therapy. It has also provided a tremendous benefit to our volunteers in increasing their horse-handling confidence and abilities and strengthening their personal commitment to our mission. Several of those volunteers have gone on to become a part of our ERAF Champions Club.
     
     The ERAF Champions Club is how we encourage sustaining gifts to our Foundation. The Champions Club provides our dedicated supporters the opportunity to make monthly tax-deductible contributions to the care of our rescue horses.
     
     The Champions Club is open to individuals, families, and businesses. Champions can designate a rescue horse to support. The donor's name and a photo of their horse hang on the new "Wall of Champions" at our barn. All Champions Club members receive invitations to special tours and events.
     
     We have grown the monthly revenue 33% compared to the previous year with 17 of our horses having an ERAF Champion sponsor.
     
     2. Property infrastructure and equipment needs are seemingly never-ending on the farm! In 2023. With a grant from the Home Depot Foundation, we completed the replacement of our entire eastern border fence line. We also completed the build-out of an onsite gently used tack shop (T’s Take Me Home Tack) which is quickly becoming a terrific resource for our local equine community and a source of revenue to help support horse care.
     
     Additional goals of reconfiguring our quarantine area, adding small medical turnouts, west fence line replacement, and flood mitigation are goals carried into 2024.
     
     3. Expanding our paid/unpaid human capital resources included adding ERAF’s first Executive Director to oversee the daily operations, provide direction of our mission and vison, and to relive the Board of Directors of management tasks of the organization. Other changes have included a new equine manager, new volunteer coordinator, and new adoption coordinator – the latter two positions filled by volunteers.
     
     Our volunteer program has been revitalized with more daily hands-on training with our horses, and volunteer clinics (led by our equine manager) which has resulted in more engagement from our volunteers.
     
     Our ultimate goal is to place our horses into adoptive homes and we were able to do that for fifteen of our horses in 2023. In total, ERAF is fast approaching our 500th adoption since our founding in 2000. We hope to achieve that goal by our 25th anniversary…one horse at a time!

Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:
1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines.
     1. Our equine manager oversees ALL activities related to the horses and works in conjunction with the staff and volunteer coordinator to ensure the safety of our horses and humans. There is always a paid staff member on the property. Volunteer team leaders support the staff on each shift.
     
     Volunteers are evaluated by the staff or equine manager to assess skill level. One-on-one training is provided accordingly. All staff and volunteers perform tasks in the same manner(i.e. procedure for haltering in the stall, catching in the field, entering exiting gates, etc) to ensure both safety and consistency.
     
     A volunteer handbook provides guidelines and a private Facebook group helps us communicate information and updates to our team.
     
     Emergency phone numbers are posted in multiple places and an emergency handbook is kept accessible in both the equine manager's office and the volunteer break room.
     
     2. Water: All horses have two water buckets in their stall (some have three!), and access to troughs during daily turnout. These are maintained by volunteers on AM/PM shifts.
     Grain: fed twice daily AM/PM - some horses also receive lunch.
     Hay: provide daily in stalls and at turnout utilizing nibble nets.
     Farrier: we have a standing weekly appointment.
     Veterinary: (includes dentals)- we have a standing weekly veterinary appointment.
     
     Feed schedules, farrier care/due dates, and veterinary care/due dates (vaccinations, Coggins, dentals, etc) are tracked in our software, Stable Secretary.
     
     Generally, all horses are turned out with their herd at night and in their stalls during the day. Exceptions are made for quarantined and/or rehabbing horses, as needed.


Equine Transition Services:
Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     We work closely with Sheriff’s Offices and Animal Care and Control units to identify at-risk horses and remove them from dangerous environments. Our team of dedicated professionals, staff, supporters, and volunteers work to rehabilitate and care for these magnificent horses so they may find their next chapter.
     
     Our H3 Program pairs our Volunteers with a specific horse and on their volunteer days they are responsible for everything from mucking their stall or paddock to grooming/bathing, and doing basic ground training.
     
     In 2023, ERAF launched a pilot program called Begin Again. The purpose of Begin Again is to evaluate and prepare horses to be suitable partners for equine therapy and learning so that they may find meaningful second careers in facilities that provide these services and/or other suitable adoptive homes. ERAF has successfully placed six of our Begin graduates into adoptive homes. Of those, three are participating in EAS programs.

Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     ERAF offers tremendous community service in attempting to educate the public by participating in Chambers of Commerce and speaking at service organizations such as Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. ERAF also participates in local festivals and provides educational tours for organizations such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Big Brother-Big Sisters, Alzheimer's Support Groups, and home-schooled children.
     We welcome local students seeking opportunities to fulfill community service requirements for school.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.

Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.
