MISSION & PROGRAMS
Mission:NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center is driven by our mission of ‘Giving a Leg Up to people of all abilities’. In the horse world, a “leg up” means to give someone a boost onto their horse. At the riding center the boost carries them not just onto their horses back, but also into their lives.
NWTRC provides equine-assisted services (EAS) to people of all ages and abilities. NWTRC is dedicated to enriching the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of our participants and their families in an environment which is safe, nurturing, challenging and fun.
Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the
EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization does not provide community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:We were thrilled to celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2023, a major accomplishment!
Our goals for 2023 included having all 7 of our horses fully sponsored, developing and hosting innovative educational opportunities for the community and NWTRC volunteers utilizing our classroom space, maintaining and improving ecological and environmental sustainability and keeping our program affordable to our participants and families.
Through our grant writing and fundraising efforts, all of our horses were sponsored.
We held three informative and very popular continuing education opportunities to NWTRC staff, board members and volunteers. Topics included equine first aid, liberty training and basics of equine massage therapy.
Gravel in our high-traffic areas was replaced in 2023, helping to reduce mud, keep our herd healthy and protect local water sources.
Thanks to rigorous fundraising and generous donors we did not raise the cost of our services to participants in 2023. Presently, participants and their families pay less than 18% of the cost of our services.
Additionally in 2023, our Founder and Executive Director, Julia Bozzo, received the PATH Intl. Region 9 Equine Caretaker of the Year award. Julia has cared for NWTRC's program horses for 30 years.
Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:
1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the
Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines.
1) The care and happiness of our horses is paramount to our program.
Our horses are respected as sentient partners. We promote using only positive language toward our horses (as well as humans).
Programs are designed to positively impact both horses and participants. The safety of the horses and people who interact with them is a priority to our program.
Program participants are supervised at all times by a PATH Intl. credentialed professional. Volunteers are required to attend a training, follow all NWTRC policies and are supervised at all times.
Horses that are showing signs of discomfort and stress are immediately removed from program activities and assessed by staff, and if necessary NWTRC's vet and body workers.
2) NWTRC horses have access to ample clean drinking water at all times. Horses are fed 3x per day with tested low-NSC hay and alfalfa. During the summer months, horses who can tolerate being on grass graze for 3-4 hours per day. All horses have either a stall or shelter with an attached run. Horses are turned out in groups as appropriate daily. Horses receive farrier work every 6-8 weeks, exams and dental work done annually by our vet, and any other vet care on an as-needed basis.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center provides adaptive horsemanship and riding lessons to people of all ages and abilities. The NWTRC is dedicated to enriching the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of our participants and their families in an environment which is safe, nurturing, challenging and fun.
Participants learn horsemanship and riding skills in an environment tailored to their individual needs and learning styles. NWTRC offers instruction to riders of all skill levels. Goals are riding-skill-based, but individuals and parents often report many therapeutic benefits of participation. These benefits include improvements in physical strength, balance, coordination, mobility, self-confidence, self-control, peer interaction, and social skills.
Adaptive riding lessons are taught by PATH International certified instructors who create a wide variety of games and exercises designed to meet each student's needs. Lesson plans take into account the participant's physical, emotional, and mental strengths and limitations. Classes include arena riding, trail rides, and group activities.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
