There's Some Light at the End of the Tunnel for America's Horses!

The world has changed for all of us in the recent past – and while we continue to face challenges, there are glimmers of a better future ahead!

Hope is on the horizon for horses and horse lovers . . .
In the midst of this difficult time, there is some good news. The demand of the international market for the meat of America's horses has declined -- dramatically lowering the number of horses being transported across our borders to Mexico and Canada for slaughter from the all-time high of 166,572 in 2012 to 34,445 in 2020.

There's no better time than right now to invest in programs with the greatest impact – those that are minimizing the conditions that lead to abuse and neglect, and the threat of slaughter by:
• Finding homes for at-risk horses and horses in transition,
• Providing a safety net for owners enduring hardship to keep their horses,
• Ensuring a safe haven for aged horses, and
• Increasing opportunities for more horses to engage and partner with people in new and innovative ways.

Our work begins each time the career of a horse comes to an end.

EQUUS Foundation Fiona is a registered Thoroughbred mare born in 2007. Due to complications from her former neglect,
she is a permanent resident at EQUUS Foundation Guardian, H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut

EQUUS Foundation Touching My Toes (Toes), a 10-year-old retired Off-the-Track Thoroughbred mare, arrived at EQUUS Foundation Guardian, Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation in Coxsackie, New York, as part of a cruelty case. She raced 27 times, earning $255,905, but was permanently lame and maimed by the age of five. Toes is now touching lives at her forever home.

During our fiscal year ending in August 2021, we were able to help provide care for over 5,000 equines at 142 charities nationwide. While Fiona and Touching My Toes have found their forever homes, all horses, even champions of the racetrack and the show ring, are only one unlucky sale away from abuse, neglect and slaughter. Tens of thousands are waiting for their Next Chapter.

We need to do more -- and we need your help!

Horses enrich the lives of millions of people and help make those with the deepest of wounds whole again. The opportunity to ensure a humane and sustainable environment for America's horses is within our reach! Please help us ensure that all of America's horses are treated like champions!
