Helping Horses Healing People

Charities are born from the passions of people united by a common interest. The EQUUS Foundation is no exception. It was the belief that horses have a positive impact in our everyday lives that led to the establishment of the EQUUS Foundation in August 2002.

The EQUUS Foundation, also known as Horse Charities of America, is the only national charity in the United States solely dedicated to horse welfare and fostering the horse-human bond. Our efforts are focused on the rescue, rehabilitation and prevention of unwanted horses, re-training of horses when their sport careers are over, and the re-homing of horses for new careers, including those serving the special needs and veterans communities . . . "Because where they go next, matters!"

The EQUUS Foundation provides resources to over 1,000 equine organizations in the United States and awards over $250,000 annually to the organizations operating at the highest standards for horse care and use and for programs where it is needed most.

Horses enrich the lives of millions of people of all ages every day, especially children. Help us transform the way horses are treated and perceived and build a more compassionate America that values the magical and powerful bond we have with horses.

The EQUUS Foundation How Horses Help

Horses have existed for 50 million years, predating man. Once the partnership between man and horse was forged, no other animal has matched the contributions that horses have made to civilization.

Even though we no longer depend on horses for travel and work, horses continue to serve the public and make a significant impact on our lives.

The benefits of human-animal interaction are well-known, but developing a bond with a horse is also physically and mentally challenging.

Riding and caring for horses produces many emotional and cognitive benefits: empowerment, motivation, problem-solving, decision-making, memory, improvements in attention span, language skills, self-esteem, self-expression, the ability to follow direction, and the willingness to face challenges.

Learning to ride involves body awareness, balance, eye-hand coordination, muscle control, patience, focus and concentration. The physical benefits of riding include enhanced spinal stimulation, sensory integration, motor, respiratory and postural control, balance, dexterity, coordination, endurance, fitness, and muscle strength and tone.

The relationship builds independence, trust, cooperation, patience, empathy for others, and hope - not only for the participants but for their families and caregivers. For people, especially children facing often insurmountable challenges, horses give them a chance to succeed that is rarely available to them.

Horses are heroes to millions of people. They enrich our lives and empower us - whether we come from a privileged background or a disadvantaged one.

The EQUUS Foundation How We Help

We serve horse charities across the United States by:

   • Providing financial support through the award of grants to charities that are improving the quality of life of horses, using horses to enrich the lives of those in need, and educating the public about the horse's unique ability to empower, teach and heal;

   • Offering insight on management and financial practices of these charities through a thorough review of their operations;

   • Providing a network of interested individuals for volunteer recruitment;

   • Educating the public about horses.

The EQUUS Foundation How You Can Help Donate

There are over 4 million people directly involved with horses. Just think if everyone gave just a little bit what we would be able to accomplish. Not sure what to give someone who already seems to have everything? Please consider making a donation as a tribute or gift. It's a great way to give back to the horses we love and solve those sometimes difficult gift-giving dilemmas.

Sponsors are a vital part of our network because they help financially support this website. Signing on as a sponsor provides maximum exposure to people with a passion for horses!

The EQUUS Foundation is deeply grateful for every donation we receive regardless of amount. In 2014, we established the Horse Whisperers Annual Fund to recognize a special group of people and organizations who express their commitment to our mission through more significant financial support. The Horse Whisperers program gives the opportunity to donors to establish a fund that is named by the donors in honor of a family member, friend, associate, or in the memory of a loved one or a loved equine companion.

Recognizing that competition for charitable dollars is fierce with so many charities in need of support, we sponsor several unique and entertaining events throughout the year.
