2025 Grant Report Story

At the Southlands Foundation, learning does not always happen at a desk or beneath fluorescent lights. Sometimes it happens in a quiet barn, with the soft sound of hooves shifting in the straw and a pony standing patiently beside a child holding a book. Read with Ponies program is built on a simple yet powerful idea: when children read aloud to horses, confidence and motivation grows, and learning becomes a shared, meaningful experience between human and horse.

We partnered with Rhinebeck School District to provide reading support for a select group of 2nd graders. They came to Southlands to gain confidence and specific reading skills. The human/horse bond plays a central role in the program’s success. Horses are highly perceptive animals, sensitive to human emotions and energy. One incident reflects this perception.

We had one student that struggled with staying in a seat and losing interest quickly. We had a young quarter horse named Smokey that had little patience. The horse and child quickly became friends. Towards the end of the program, we had a session where the local reporter and administrative staff in attendance. The session was drawing to a close involving packing up and children discussing what they achieved. Smokey and this child were still reading along with the child showing the pony the pictures in the text. They were in a moment and did not realize we were packing up.

What an experience for the student and the pony! In the gentle space where stories are read and ponies listen, children discover more than words on a page. They discover confidence, connection, and the understanding that learning can be kind. Through the simple act of reading with a pony, the Southlands Foundation fosters a powerful human/horse partnership that leaves a lasting imprint on both hearts and minds.
