New Eligibility Requirements for 2025

The EQUUS Foundation updated its eligibility requirements for equine charities to participate on the Equine Welfare Network and be eligible for funding in 2025.

Member public charities must meet our minimum standards for equine welfare and business practices and are required to attest to the accuracy of the organization's profile annually between December 1 and December 31.

Most member public charities take the additional step to attain the Guardian designation which involves not only making comprehensive data about their programs, horse care practices, and governance available for public scrutiny but also critical information to the EQUUS Foundation which is not made public.

While it is not an accreditation, attainment of the Guardian designation is a recognition of an organization's commitment to transparency and accountability and an opportunity to receive financial support from the EQUUS Foundation.

Mentors are equine charities that meet the EQUUS Foundation highest standards for business and equine welfare practices. The Mentor designation is an accreditation.

Guardians and Mentors are assigned a Star Rating based on the degree to which an organizations meets the EQUUS Foundation requirements for equine welfare and business practices. Mentors receive a 5-Star rating. Guardians may receive a rating ranging from 1 to 4 stars.

Funding Opportunities Webinar on October 30

Only equine charities that attain the 2025 EQUUS Foundation Guardian designation or Mentor accreditation are eligible to receive financial support from the EQUUS Foundation in 2025.

The process consists of two steps. Step One opens on December 1 and closes on December 31. Step One consists of your verifying the information in your organization's profile and our receipt of the assessment we provide to your veterinarian.

Step Two will open on January 1, 2025 for equine charities that have received approval of their Step One submissions. Step Two will close on March 31.

Attainment of the Guardian Designation guarantees a minimum Equine Welfare grant of $500 and access to additional grant programs and campaigns. Equine Welfare Grants range from $500 to $5,000. Recipients are selected in August and announced in September each year.

$25,000 Lafitte De Muze Matching Campaign
December 13, 2024
National Day of the Horse

Congress designated December 13th as the National Day of the Horse in 2004 to celebrate the cultural, historic, and economic contributions that horses have made and continue to make.

Thanks to EQUUS Foundation Equine Ambassador, Lafitte De Muze, and his owner, Cheryl Olsten, the EQUUS Foundation Guardian charity you select will receive 100% of your donation of $500 or less made on the National Day of the Horse, December 13, and a matching donation for as long as the $25,000 in matching funds are available.

To allow more charities to benefit from the matching funds, for donations over $500, the Guardian charity you select will receive 100% of your donation, but the donation will not be matched.

Make sure you have logged into your profile to select an equine from among your herd to represent your organization as its Equine Ambassador to participate in the Lafitte De Muze Matching Campaign on December 13.
